Awesome pick. Love the focused look on the young one.

Battenkill looks like an awsome race. Too bad we cannot get more of this and less crits in the U.S.

Yeah well said. In the end they just can't live without the bike, I know of nearly no former pro riders that still don't ride their bike on a regular basis, even guys like indurain and cipo still do

I would say the opposite. Many Pro's hang up the bike and do not touch it for years. Hinault did not ride his bike for almost 20 years. Brunyeel is the same.

Yeah, I'm sure there are lots of pros who take that route also. No sense in trying to pigeonhole everyone into one mold. My comment around Floyd was based on a couple guys I know who do ultra endurance MTB races and they met Floyd when he was doing those. They said he was actually a really nice guy and seemed to just enjoy bike racing.

Personally, If I'd had a twenty year pro career where I eat, slept, and ****ed on a bike no mater what the weather, I'd probably want to take a little time off after retirement too. Still, there's plenty of ex racers out there who are involved in cycling one way or another and when you meet them, they obviously love cycling.

Saw Flandis today at the Devils Punch Bowl RR. Looked in decent shape. Hard/Hilly course. Not sure how he finished but he wasnt sprinting for the (uphill) finish. Was in a good mood before the race and even smiled for the camera :D

I think he manages to get by on the good will and charity of others a la OJ. I guess he has alimony payments now too so his declared income must be near zero.

+1 this is my experience. Guys don't even own clothing for riding, have a bunch of old team stuff that they won't wear even for Halloween. I remember seeing
Crest and LA Sheriff guys show up to training rides and races only to show that they could still crush the gears even with a few years of heavy pizza and beer added to their training regiment. If anybody has a Brock Glover story they were always awesome. I have ridden with a few ex-pro athletes from other disciplines and most bike racers are lucky that they liked things with motors and snow or there would have been no prize money left. Guys that showed up to Sea Otter probably wish Grampa Ned would have stayed home. When you look over and a 50 year old guy is punishing you it has to be that much more painful

I think O. J. has a big fat pension.
Do riders inquire as to riding for a team in Europe, or do they wait by the phone, hoping for a call? I believe it was in a Velonews article that said Landis left Ouch-Maxxis because he wanted to ride in Europe. No Euro team is interested in his services?

Maybe BMC will rehire him (Same DS) now that Ballan et al are suspended. That would give FL a reason and he could be reunited with Hincapie and leave it all on the road for Cadel.

It should be interesting to see Floyd racing against Lance at Gila.

I worry for Floyd, I think the defense, the 'trial' the loss of his family, watching guys who did worse get treated like cultural icons, I am concerned about him sliding deeper into a hole than he already is. A higher profile American event such as this poses more risk than benefit.

I wish him peace.

Go ahead and flame me all you want. I really am not interested in beating him down any further.

It would be better to have Hincapie and Evans work for FLandis. Flandis knows how to close the deal in a GT, something that Evans has never managed. :)

Nicely put Alberto I'm with you on this one so easy for the knockers to point the finger but turn blindly to the other serial offenders. I spent some time with FL last year and he struck me he is ready to move on, no ego, humbled and quite genuine really.

Did he seem willing to admit he had doped?

Now that is some real racing. If I were a millionaire (via me winning lotto), I would do everything possible to keep races like these going. No matter how much the cost.

Then again we still have pros who retire and still race. Only train a few days a weeks and still hammer everybody. One of them who rode for Silence Lotto, last weekend, did 250km on Saturday (including riding to and from the race, and the race as well), turned up to the crit the next day and won easy.

Flandis can train and race all he wants and I Hope all the best for him. However Floyd can cure all his ills by coming clean. I am with you to an extent. However it is not we the fans nor the media or even his fellow riders who lead a false crusade. It is Floyd and Floyd alone who dwells in his own sea of guilt and remorse and denial.

I am sorry his wife left him. I am sorry his father in law passed away as he did. I am sorry he lied

I have hope for him but no compassion.

Well said.

Many times I have felt "sorry" for Floyd and have tried to find compassion, but he has always managed to do or say something that has made it impossible for me to have anything but negative feelings for him. He has created his own situation, it is only he who can turn things around. So far it doesn't look like he wants to. Maybe someday...

Good post.

Considering how he pretty much defrauded his fans I think it's hard to feel sorry for him. I bought into his whole Floyd Fairness Fund campaign and I know a lot of other people believed him. Getting your fans to help with part of your $million + legal bill when you were guilty isn't cool. But then again the fans (myself included :( ) were gullible enough to believe him.

I am curious to know if Floyd would have amassed so many wins "lean and clean"

Considering how he's now not even winning local TTs and doing nothing in road races (Battenkill as the exception), I don't think he would have amassed many at all.

FLandis was caught out with Rasmussen, Ricco, Vino, Schumacher, etc. during the three short years that the ASO decided that they would do something about doping. After the ASO management was changed at the end of 2008, the Tour and the whole sport went right back to where it was before 2006. Why should FLandis want to make himself any more of a scapegoat than he already is?

The real way forward for him would be to tell all about Postal. Just admitting that he himself doped would open himself up to further villification, and you can bet that McQuaid would make the most of it.

But why would we want a tell all book by Floyd when we could hear about it so elliquently by David Walsh, Greg LeMond and the cycling news forum clinic?

I read Floyds first book and it was hogwash.

Now there's a recommendation!
I'll have to look for it at my local library.
No sarcasm intended.
