It is, although unlike Tony Martin he doesn't seem such a long shot, because the kid can climb. I was actually more impressed by what he did amongst people with Tour form in San Sebastian than by anything he did during the Giro, and I find myself jumping the bandwagon. Richie Porte is a future GT contender.

After San Sebastian the hype is warranted, but just from the Giro performance, no way.

What about Sagan? will he become a GC guy or a sprinter?

He's just 20 so it's hars to predict, but I don't think he will be a GC guy. He will be damn allround tho, but in the big mountains I can't see him competing.
Bunch sprints.. maybe, but I mostly think about week tours and classics.

i laugh when i see martin touted as a GT prospect. He has never shown the climbing abilities it takes to win a GT. Sorry, the likes of Gesink, Nibali and of course schleck are much better GT riders in that age group.

Martin has shown some okay climbing ability.

Could he hang on with the heads of state? Probably not. But he was able to hang on to Garate going up Ventoux last year... a guy who's had two top 5 finishes at the Giro.

That shows some talent... but last year's tour was likely a bit more chemically enhanced then this year... and many of the bigger TT guys who could "hang on" last year were not able to do so this year.

Tony's GC ambitions probably aren't helped by the fact that he keeps having to divide his time between climbing mountains and babysitting Cav.

I thought the plan was that he didn't have to do much of that in this year's Tour? Eventually he did, yes, but that's when his own GC hopes had already slid down the Alpine slopes.

I think that was the plan coming in and Martin looked really strong in the prologue and on the cobbles stage until he crashed with Frank Schleck. I think that's the point they changed tack. Certainly Martin did a lot of work on the front for Cavendish's first win

I´m not so sure about this one, but I think Jan Bakelants could develop into a GC rider, even though I think he´s more of a one day racer.
