Try climbing anything higher than a bridge without pulling on the bars! Having ridden after my fracture had healed I can attest to the strain it endures.

The idea that a collarbone fracture bass no impact on ones ability to ride is laughable. The only rider I can think of who carried on was Hamilton, and there were DSs from other teams suggesting it was not a true fracture.

A single pin & 10 days rest before commencing rehab is not a complex fracture.

But my point was that our standards of pain & a pro's are very different, and their capacity to recover is as well.
I don't mean that you can ride with a broken wrist or collarbone, I mean that when healed they don't pose a problem anymore. Whereas a broken upper leg could.

Well, let's hope there are no complications. It can't be that uncommon an injury for a pro cyclist - isn't this a similar injury to Vino's in the Tour?

A complex fracture of the femur is something else than a fractured wrist or collar bone: you don't actually cycle with your wrist.

The Femur will be stronger after the op - the plate and the screws and the bone natural healing.

As I said before the muscle lose is the problem

I don't think his career is in jeopardy, but 2012 might be a transition year and since 2011 was also (generally) disappointing because of circumstanes, he could be losing 2 years atba moment when he should be "collecting" on his talent and that is very unfortunate to,say the least.

The guy definitely needs a change of luck. Van De Velde had a horror run with injuries also and only recently has shown a return to some form after a few years of being uncompetitive. I hope Gesink recovers quickly as he really has not lived up to his potential yet.

Tell that to VDB1 lol.

Or even better: Freddy Maertens---> His crash and broken bone(same as Boonen and VDB) ended his career way too soon.

Matti Breschel?

Tom Boonen is worse than Gesink.

Got sick right before Tirreno-Adriatico, bike problems at Gent-Wevelgem, crash at your most favorite one day race, bike problems and crashes at Paris-Roubaix, crashes at the Tour de France, crashes at the Vuelta(and his balls got injured as well there lol)

I believe Joseba Beloki suffered a fractured femur on the descent to Gap in the 2003 Tour. He never returned to anything resembling the same level. Hopefully Gesink's injury isn't as serious and he can make a full recovery. I always felt for Beloki and it was painful watching him struggle in his efforts to get back to his elite level.

overreact much?

A fractured femur is a tough one to recover from, it does take time but others have returned to racing after such an injury, for example Brent Bookwalter

I thought he had surgery to put a titanium screw/pin in his leg to help deal with the alignment and is going to start rehabbing in the near future.

He just thinks he is down/out for 6 months.

The problem with this type of injury is quite often the blood flow to the head is impacted over time and you end up with a hip replacement or hip resurfacing like John-lee Augustyn or Floyd had to get. Lets hope thats not the case.

vintage ryo. a rider gets hurt he doesn't care--he's happy about it. Unless it is a Colombian or something, and then he has no stomach for the race.

Are you sure he meant that rather than let's hope he gets better?

That's who I was thinking of. I suspect that ending up like Beloki may be a worst case scenario though.
