I think Cunego should go for the Giro too: another top 10 at the Tour won't add anything to his career, while at Giro he might be essential for Lampre against Liquigas.
No Giro d'Italia for Cunego. He'll ride Tour de France. [Source]

Shame, was hoping to see him possibly on the Giro podium once more.
Hopefully he can get a stage at the Tour. Another win in Lombardy is also on the cards, especially with the new course.

What will the new course be like?

Sensible decision from him anyway. He's become so boring last years. He was much more exciting in 2007-2009.
It was a sensible decision if he kept his goal on the classics. If he switches target every two years he'll never succed....

His goal in 2011 was also the classics, but for some reason he really sucked in them.

What about Anton. I don't see any good reason why he shouldn't try for GC at the Giro. What, he won't be able to recover for the Vuelta? That's a bit of a joke.

I can't recall if Anton was sick at the beginning of the Vuelta or was his disappointing performance a result of not enough race miles in his legs at the start? I know some were attributing it to the tough Giro but, as you state, that shouldn't have been the case.

Most sprinters do both the Giro and Tour. Why is Cav given so much special attention? This isn't anything new. If Cav really wants to prove the Giro is special for him, he'd finish the race. Perhaps next year, this is an Olympic year after all ;)

Cos he goes out of his way year after year to tell ppl how important it is to him. Unlike that other sky leader or lots of top anglophone riders who only care for the tour.

+ He's probably the biggest name who does the giro almost every year.

And farrar gets praise also for saying he really cares about the classics and wants to do well in them.

Because Farrar puts his mouth where his legs are ;)
And duh, Wiggins is a guy for the GC, Cav for the sprints. Sprinters don't need to peak to win bunch sprints.

He himself attributed it to the Giro - that's why he's only doing the Vuelta this year. He wasn't alone to be fair - only Menchov of those who did the Giro and Vuelta for GC was really strong at the latter.

The same as last year. The course Zaugg won on. A course for climbers. With Cunego also having a decent sprint, he should be among the favorites.

Thats weird. If my memory is correct, then Anton did not take Giro last year seriously, sort of preparation race, just to hunt stages, but without GC ambitions.

He was saying that, but he was still up there on the mountain stages until the Gardeccia stage where he cracked and lost 8 minutes. After that he helped Nieve, esp. on the Sestriere stage when Nieve was sick. I guess it's a combination of the 2011 Giro being particularly tough and Anton being quite fragile. Even the normally tireless Purito didn't get back to his best in time for the Vuelta.

Too bad, I didn't like last year's course. The flat section before the final hill kind of killed the race.

What Cav doesnt put his legs where his mouth is at the Giro:confused:

He might still win sprints, but his form was crappy at the Giro last year. And he usually doesn't finish the Giro. Not even in 2009.

Besides, Petacchi entered the Giro pretty much every year as well. So did Robbie Mcewen, Tyler Farrar and Mario Cipollini. The only big sprinter that has never entered the Giro is Tom Boonen.

That new Lombardy course is bad indeed. Now the 2010 course, that was something else (of course aided by the weather).

I think 2012 will be a better edition than last year, but 2010 was a special one. That was an epic race, reminiscent of the old days, a true classic. Scarponi and Gilbert shoulder to shoulder in bad dark weather with a car with lights turned on behind them.

It was a big letdown. Nothing happened, Gilbert and Scarponi found themselves in front a long way from the end and everyone knew what the result would be.

Of course for you since your fav won it was the best race ever, just like for you Contador winning the race in the first week at the 2011 Giro was way way more exciting than the 2010 giro with all the highs lows and twists.
