I edited the first post and put there the rumoured route.
This way it should be more readable. I'll update it directly as soon as I know something else.

That top part would be steep too?
I don't have first-hand infos...
but if it's about 1 km long and the altitude gain is 2832-2758=74m, then the average will be around 7%...

Today's Tuttosport has an article about stage 20. It confirms the rumours I posted... Cavalese - Stelvio

Cavalese - Egna - Mezzocorona - Val Di Non - Val Di Sole - Tonale - Aprica - Tirano - Mortirolo (from Tovo) - Grosio - Bormio - Stelvio, with 1 km of sterrato after the proper pass, to finish at 2832m.

I made the profile

The Tovo side is not available yet, so I just used a sector of the Mazzo one. The actual climb should be 4 km longer, and so the descent.
Please note the total lenght of the stage...

edit: Stage 13 should be a hilly stage finishing near Cuneo, while the MTF to Piani Resinelli could have Valcava before.

couldn't be more perfect for rujano, especially the altitude and lenght of the stage

tbh, the stage rumoured could reach 270 kms... there's still a little steep climb right after Aprica which I forgot to include in the profile. If really this stage will be THAT long I'll be shocked

Didn't want to look at this thread until the route is officially announced, but that profile looks amazing

That stage, Wow.

but i see some potential faults.

1 It makes me worry that there wont be anything else in the Giro because they would use up like 3 major stages in 1 there.

2 obviously we cant have 1 rider running away with the race at this point, otherwise its a wasted stage with only a stage win and possibly KOM and points to fight for.

3 it might come too late in the race. See Ventoux 09 or Finnestre last year which should have been an awesome stage. Riders might be too tired.

4 Mortirolo might be wasted. Stelvio isnt as steep as the others and there are flat kms between.

That means attacks are more risky. You will need to maintain on flat sections if you are on your own.

On Giua Fedaia Gardeccia there was barely any gap between the descents and climbs.

Hmm...good points. And I was just getting excited!

Almost as if the new organizers are looking to be just as extreme as Zomegnan, but in a more traditional way.

I hope they don't stick too many of their eggs into this one, very late basket.
Worried about the possibly wasted Mortirolo, too.

Im not sure what this means. Does it mean both Stelvio and Mortirolo or that its either or?

If its the latter that stage wont be happening.

It means they'll try to put both in.

Yes and on twitter they said they had something of a surprise regarding this coming up "tomorrow".

----------------------------------------------------------------

Do you remember the polls to choose the climbs you would like to see in the 2012? STELVIO and MORTIROLO won...tomorrow a great surprise!

Don't miss the appointment: tomorrow BIG ANTICIPATION on Giro d'Italia 2012 route! Be there... #giro

The polls were a bit rigged like those WWE ones to be fair.

You decide, but the way its set up its clear what people are going to vote for.

As if they were going to choose Blockhous and Passo Tonale.

It looks great! Not as long as we expected, but real tough!
Close to 6,000 m!!!
Hopefully we see real racing on both sides of the Mortirolo.

I love this comment:
quanto ci scommettete...

A cynic worthy of CN.

Looks like a great stage but I have not sure the last saturday is the place to put it. It seems that nothing much tends to happen on the first or last mountain stages in a GT.

Crostis-Zoncolan MkII

Mortirolo will force a selection, for sure, the descent will be a huge factor, and anything could happen on the grind up Stelvio.
