From today's Tuttosport. These are only rumours, so nothing confirmed.

After transfer and rest day the Giro will restart in the Veneto region. There will be fewer transfers between the stages, which was one of the major points why Zomegnan had to go. It also looks like no stage in France, so no Alpe d'Huez. Maybe 2013.

The concept is to create a less cruel, but still very demanding Giro. The southernmost point will be Matese. Maybe with a finish in Campitello. The focus is on classic climbs like maybe Terminillo, Macerone or Abetone. No experiments like Gardecchia and so also nothing like Rifugio Calvanico, the southern Zoncolan.

The race will touch Piemonte, but only with a hilly stage. The decicive stages will be in the last week. Tre Cime, Stelvio (tt), Pordoi and Mortirolo are mentioned and rumoured. Maybe a hilly tt around Sondrio. The last stage in Milano will again be for the sprinters.

Do they mean the stage (such a long hard mountain stage) or the fact that it was a new/untried finish?

Agreed that Stelvio TT seems like a waste, especially when it's so rarely used.

Tre Cime will be good though!

Problems about bringing the tv equipment up there. Same for calvanico.

I realise they will never have Alpe coming straight off a descent, but they could probably do better to front load it. This year's stage isn't bad, but a bigger climb before Telegraphe/Galibier would have made it harder. 2008 they did the easy side of Galibier and maybe one other?

They could, actually. Right in the other side of the valley, there is the col du Solude, which both sides start few kilometers from Bourg d'Oisans (one of the roads starts precisely in Bourg d'Oisans btw).
This col could be perfectly climbed after the Galibier or Glandon/Croix de Fer, and just before l'Alpe.
But as we all know, ASO seems to had lost the pyrenean and alpine pages of their road atlas and since then use and re-use, over and over, the same climbs.

Meanwhile, you all should take a look at the Giro facebook page

There's a poll (organised as a tournament) about the climbs we'd like to see next year :)

How much weight do voter's actually carry in these polls? Is it simply for fun? I hope Fauniera will pass Corones, as its been way too long since Fauniera has been used.

FOr the other questions I tried to pick climbs I was unfamiliar with that looked challenging. Naturally everyone goes for the big named Stelvios, Grappas, etc., but I hate a climb's mystique weakened by overuse.

Well, the official twitter is hyping it up and announcing more interactivity between internet users and the giro, so perhaps it could have some effect

Amazing idea - Plan de Corones is popular (although they should really specify the approaches not just the climbs).

Who knows... they'll take it into account however.
Yesterday I found the page with the tournament table, but I can't find it anymore... can someone help me? :(
edit: Found it

Quick recap of what I heard yesterday (just rumours anyway)

1. after Denmark, flat TTT in Friuli
2. some stages along the adriatic coast (Montelupone?)
3. first MTF to Campitello Matese
4. Awesome mountain stage in Tuscany (Abetone, S.Pellegrino In Alpe and Ciocco, in no particular order)
5. Hilly stage in Liguria (already told that)
6. No mountain stages in Piemonte ( :( ) [maybe a ITT]
7. MTF to the Tre Cime Di Lavaredo
8. dolomitic stage with MTF To Alpe Di Pampeago OR Pordoi
9. Stelvio MTT
10. Queen stage with Gavia-Mortirolo-Aprica-St.Cristina (like 1994)
11. Final stage flat to Milan

San Pellegrino in Alpe is difficult and with that steep Ciocco it is a special day.

I made the MTFs profiles (based on rumours). Campitello Matese should be the only climb of that day, so I didn't made a profile.
1. Ciocco: rumours say there will be Abetone and San Pellegrino in Alpe before...

2. Tre Cime Di Lavaredo: rumours say the combo Duran/Staulanza/Giau

continue...

3. Pordoi: It seems Pampeago rumour has fallen... the Pordoi should be approached via Fedaia, starting from Cortina they should do a long loop with Valparola, Erbe, Gardena, Campolongo, Fedaia and Pordoi

4. Queen Stage: very likely the finish will be in Trivigno (Santa Cristina)

Do you like them?

Only thing I'd change is that instead of Santa Cristina I'd like to see them cross over the main road and finish on the Prato Valentino (16,1km, 8,2%). But of course we're pretty sure of Santa Cristina being the finish.

I'm also disappointed at no Pampeago as that can go straight after Manghen like 2008. However, the Pordoi stage inevitably means Fedaia, and lord knows me I love some Passo Fedaia.

Vegni interview (I'll loosely translate some sentences)
I:An easier Giro on the profiles or in the lack of transfers??
V:«Let's say tranfers will be much less, while surely climbs won't be missing, but placed in the right moments».
I:Rumours said an MTT Bormio-Stelvio; do you confirm?
V:«Stelvio will be in the race, but not as an MTT. The Giro 2012 will show some climbs that did the history of the race».
I:Can you add another historical climb?
V:«Mortirolo should be in the race too, but I can't say more».

Stelvio road stage, brilliant!
yes, I just hope it won't be included in the Mortirolo stage, it would be a waste.
It'd be awesome in a MTF to Bormio 2000.

one 50 km ITT (not entirely flat) imho is enough

Oh, yes please!

The other alternative is that the Mortirolo stage precedes it then they do the Bormio side (possibly after the Gavia?!) and finish on the shorter climb to Solda.

This is another good option, but personally I prefer having Stelvio/Bormio 2000 BEFORE Mortirolo/Aprica/St. Cristina

On RAI tonite it was reported that after 3 days in Danmark, they would move to Verona for a nite TTT.

Then there would be also the Stelvio, by trying to do the highest finish/passage (?) in EU at 2900metres.
