A throwback to the Dark Ages of the Sky Era. Like this entire stage. At least that is how I remember those days.
Guy still in pink, still leading the race, still has Bora front and center. And talk about paying attention!! Roglic got the reveal if he needs to chase Del Toro and if UAE was going to sneak in a secret plan. No, Ayuso still designated leader, got to see if Yates was a player, not today . Roglic raced excellent despite skeleton staff going up uphill.

Made sure to do enough to get 2nd and reduce the bonuses for others but without dragging the gap closer.

Storer did crash indeed on Thursday, as Raphael Meyer from Tudor confirmed during the Swiss TV coverage today. He didn't go into detail, but said that this stage was mainly about not losing too much time.

Congrats to Ayuso confirming what many suspected and a bit of a shock to see Roglic looking a bit shaky in the final.
Impressive level by Del Toro too. But the highlight for me was Egan Bernal. He's back!

I feel like everyone is trying to gaslight me into finding the Giro more exciting than the Tour. Like in the Vuelta last year when BOC got all that time, and everyone started going on about how we finally had a competitive race...and then Rogla won easily. I reckon this Giro will be the same - Ayuso and Roglic will share the mountain top finishes between them, and Roglic will win GC comfortably after Ayuso has an unexpectedly bad day somewhere.
Obviously I'll be thrilled if I'm actually wrong and Egan Bernal ends up winning GC.
That's a common feature of cycling forums all over, unfortunately. Has been that way literally for decades.
After watching the last several kms I have to change my mind on Roglic quitting cycling....
He was clearly happy marking guys and was 2 groups back when Ayuso went. He got out of the saddle briefly and then spun through one clutch of charging finishers up into the last group. It looked pretty effortless so his casual attitude might suggest he wanted to ship a little time to get other teams to help control. He's down a good climber on Bora, now so it is a reasonable strategy.

It's not more exciting than the tour of course but still better than last years Giro, Pogacar races range from 0/10 over in 5 seconds when he has no competition to 10/10 2 hours of high stakes action when he does against Vingegaard. Vuelta was good last year even discarding the GC, just the vibes of the likes of Soler and Kern Pharma were immaculate.
Race will open up when there are bigger gaps I think, lesser GC guys getting in breaks and such.

Sunday should be good . Just hopefully nobody going home in ambulance. Piddock will want to win and he's only 1 minute behind so they won't let him go, they have to follow.

Yes I think Bernal should make a dodgy deal with Del Toro before the stage for them to both attack at some point too, get in his ear telling him he can beat Ayuso and this is his big chance, really stir the pot.

UAE has the roster to kill competition. I want to see Del Toro get into a 5 mins break and Ayuso getting crazy. Let me get some drama!

Just back after a 6 and a half hour dinner with Italian friends (in a land that time forgot). What a great day, some good racing late on and funny joking with the cyclists who were cruising in late ( they still had their sense of humour and many were eating lamb skewers as they cycled up the hill). I'll give a detailed report tomorrow.

Del Toro and especially Bernal, nice to see him back in the fight. As for Rogla i feel that his team did a good job today, controlling and having Pellizzari there till the end. As for Rogla i feel that his terrain was not at the very end of this stage but a couple of kilometres prior, over there the selection was not made and the bunch was still too big. On top of that riders as Bernal and Ayuso rather eager to win today.

I didn't understand Bahrain today. Tiberi has no sprint. Have they gone for their podium chances? The worst thing to do is to benefit a rival: Del Toro. Del Toro is currently a rival for the top five. The way to get him out of there is to force UAE to work and for Del Toro to end up being a domestique.
We're 7 days into the Giro, and Del Toro hasn't worked at all.
Bernal shouldn't have closed the gap on Ciccone. The one that has to close the gap is the team that has superiority, and Bernal, in Ayuso's wheel, has to try to finish it off.
Today they did all the work for UAE.
McNulty and Yates didn't work at all. Luckily for them, they don't seem in great shape and are losing time every day. But since the route is so bad, they aren't losing enough, and they'll lose even less if they don't work.
And if they don't work, Del Toro won't get his domestique turn.
Ayuso and Del Toro 2-3 without any effort from their domestiques. All the work has been done by Bahrain and Ineos.
Bora has no choice, even though Rogic is wearing the jersey, I'd pass the buck to them.

The best thing that could happen to Ayuso's rivals is if Del Toro ignores his team's instructions on Sunday and goes all out, creating a conflict in the UAE.

Tiberi needs a sustained, constant pace on easier slopes. With the team in front he could control the pace and had no risks of the group fractioning in front of him. It was Pello Bilbao who made the call because he thought the climb had too many turns and the elastic could snap in case there were accelerations, stop&gos and whatnot.
