The damage is done - we already saw the riders were refusing to race when the forecasts showed raceable conditions. A dynamic has been created that can only result in the slow degradation of the sport in the name of “health and safety.”

The Giro is over except for the race for extra spots on the podium. They might as well just cancel today's stage and hope for better weather tomorrow. The logistical challenges will make it nearly impossible to make this work.

Gazzetta saying that Monte Pana has been cut?!

Edit: no they just said Santa Christina because that's the nearest town

So now they are showing riders either hanging out in tents or on their bikes, crowds hiding under umbrellas because it's snowing... I have no idea what's going on but I like this better than "the event has ended" screen.

No commentary btw., all you can hear is a bird singing.

Swapping the Vuelta and Giro would be better. The weather in Spain is typically better in May and it's less of a high mountain race. The risks of extreme heat during the Vuelta are also minimized.

While I agree with the idea because Spain is warmer than Italy in May and Italy cooler in August/September, I don't think its going to happen because the Vuelta organisers do not have an incentive to change dates as the field would likely get worse and while the Giro field would likely get better, the race has always been held during May as far as I know.

Regarding today's stage with the first mountains now out of the route the stage will be much easier to be controlled by the peloton and pure climbers will have a much more difficult task getting in the breakaway. Bora should ride for Martinez as a punchier stsge suits him better than Thomas maybe even Bahrein for Tiberi so if I was Ineos, I would put guys like Foss and Ganna in the breakaway to try to ensure that the breakaway arrives and there are no bonus seconds for GC riders but I give a good chance to the break being caught so this could turn out to be Pogačar's fifth stage win.

The lesson to be learned here, from the Giro perspective, next time make such climb MTF. As in my opinion the riders would be prepared to climb it, even in such conditions, descending no.

I think there's a much better solution to this – know that the risk of issues on 2000m+ passes is high, and prepare non altitude routes to get from A to B. It's less cost-effective, but it's less farcical.

As I posted earlier, the convoy has left Livigno a while ago and it is now headed to Spondinga. Not sure they will reach the new starting town in time because as @roundabout pointed out it will be a logistical nightmare.

Team busses were sent to the Umbrailpass earlier this morning, which is the main reason why the riders refused the fake start option (no way of changing clothes after riding those 10-20 km outside Livigno).
I feel for the people at the start, many kids waiting for the riders only got to watch a car procession. It is what it is.

What is the non altitude route from A (Livigno) to B (Monte Pana)?

Except dangerous sprints, nothing can be done about those.
