The only thing you need to plan beforehand is that which hinges on early planning. Many things can go wrong, so keep your options open.

Well, as long as it works out in the end it isn't. I just stated that I didn't understand it, like from a organisational perspective. They know they always have climbs that might not be passable and then there's always the question: what now? A bit like the German Railway: "Oh my god! Winter is coming in winter! How did that happen?" and then the trains run even more late.

Nowadays it's simply better to loose time in the first week als long as you are not a top favorite. Just gives you a chance at a stage win and you will come back into GC anyways if you're good enough in the 2nd half of the GT.
