Maybe wants to make it a harder day. Rather than just soft pedalling to the last climb, where a fresher Yates could gain 30 seconds with a 2km attack.

Maybe Mitchelton were doing the old technique that Armstrong did with Ullrich. Constantly varying the pace, going over threshold for a bit, then under threshold, knowing that changes in intensity would cause Dumoulin more problems than Yates. And Dumoulin has put a stop to it.
