The few domestiques in the lead group now have to go all out on the next 5 kilometers to give their leaders as big of a lead as possible before the Etna starts. No need to save any energy just to get dropped before you can use it

Going to be interesting in the breakaway. They'll need to get along well and commit in order to match the tempo of the group. The slope favours trains.

I have the slight feeling that when the Astana DS claimed they'd concentrate on stage wins from now on he wasn't telling the complete truth

Oh ffs BMC...

Protecting the jersey while Dennis will lose minutes today.
I don't believe Denis wil lose minutes. He did fairly well on similar finishes (just outside top 10 or just inside). If he loses time at all, it will be <1 min
If the climb is ridden decently, I say he at least loses a minute. But no matter what, okay 95%, he will lose the jersey to Tom or another rider.
Hm, you might be underestimating Dennis here. But we'll see
Meh. Think he is severely overrated as a climber, maybe because he speaks english and therefore is easier to communicate with for the media.

Astana not messing about now! Front of the race don't look particularly interested, bizarre!

Regardless of how good he actually will be, he’s their GC rider and he’s in pink. As a basic matter of respect to him, the team has to ride as if he’s good enough at least until he demonstrates that he doesn’t have it. If he doesn’t have it, as he probably doesn’t, it’s not a huge investment of team resources as he will lose the jersey today and they won’t be riding on the front again.

It’s bad for morale if a team assumes in advance that their leader will get smashed even when he’s in the leaders jersey. Even if he almost certainly will get smashed.

Maybe Chaves should make a first attack, look who is left and try to cooperate with whoever this is, because letting Haig ride against the whole Astana train is not gonna work.

Better to have Haig kill himself for some km first.

Formolo back. No help from Konrad or Grosschartner? A bit weird.
Konrad has a free role, so that makes sense. Großschartner, no idea why he isn't helping
