UCI wants Pogacar to win the double so bad that they won't allow him to ride under snow...
Seriously, what a bunch of pu$$ies!!!

I actually think this is a pretty sensible compromise. I'm curious how that "3 minute neutralization" would work with riders all over the road.
Agree, they‘ve come up with the genius idea: if the weather is extreme, it‘s extreme and we neutralize, if it‘s just normal weather, we don’t do that. I‘m interested in how this will be applied though. Will the CPA representative and an RCS representative go to the top of Umbrail to check the weather or do they just decide it at random?

By the way, three minute neutralization means Quintana gets three minutes. Duh…

I think so too, but does "This action will be effective in the climb of the Umbrail pass before or on 40km" mean that it'll be a last minute decision, or what's that part about?

I think so. This time they’ll let the actual weather as it is decide, not the fears or wishes of the riders in the morning.

Luckily there will be a race and this won‘t be the podium tomorrow.

I feel that the elements must be taken into consideration and on the race day. Back in the day, where you could still put half an hour into competition, then riding down some mountain could still be measured. In this day and age, due to all advances in cycling, it's full gas like all the time, for the whole peloton. Realistically cycling was not made for that. This are hence new circumstances and they should be addressed appropriately.

It will be interesting. I hope they allow the break to keep their buffer, but perhaps for the peloton and everyone after they just treat it like a briefly closed level crossing in Paris-Roubaix.

Significant rain and thunderstorms in the region of tomorrow’s stage now too but not as cold. Is it going to be another repeat of today?

Well if the thunderstorms contain lightning that is a no go for any outdoor activity.

Well, yes, but cycling races usually take place with the possibility of thunderstorms, because it misses the race most of the time and you just can‘t predict where the downpour will happen.

The race organisation has the latest meteorological information, so they will know if lightning is around. Normal rule of the thumb is if the lightining is within 10km then the race will be neutralised until the lightning has passed. Then again some on this forum will say the riders need to be brave and heroic.

the lightning protocol often comes into effect in US sports, but in Europe I can't remember a single event getting cancelled or interrupted because of it

Germany vs Slovakia football game in 2016 restarted 25 minutes later after halftime but the pitch was also soaked, so they couldn’t have played on earlier anyway. 2022 or 2023 Cro Race had one massive deluge where they didn‘t interrupt it. You can see I‘m out of examples.

If they are already out riding and lightning starts, is there really any way to actually do anything about it? Is being on a bike with rubber tires safer than getting off and sheltering on the side of the road? Actually curious.

This has literally never happened...

Of course they're not going to change the course because of lightning. I understand people are scared of it but it's just electricity, literally the same thing you activate when you flip on a light switch. It would be extremely hypocritical to glorify en vogue electrical vehicles for "green" reasons but then be against it when it comes to racing.

But it is too much of it. And much more than the switch that you flip!

This is what outside sports use for outdoor sports in Australia and I guess other countries.
also in the US, where NASCAR regularly gets postponed due to nearby lightning, for example. It happens a couple of times per year. They also cancelled a day of the BMX World Championships in South Carolina because of it last week.

In Europe, protocols are not as strict, though, and it almost never happens.
