Giro d'Italia Giro d'Italia 2025 Stage 10: Lucca – Pisa (Time Trial)

I can't imagine the race being held as planned so let's see what they come up with. Hopefully it won't be cancelled, but I fear that it will.

Tarling looks like the obvious winner here. Arensman to podium the stage. Del Toro to beat Ayuso.

If this ITT gets cancelled then the "path to victory" for Rogla gets harder and harder.

But I'm going to go out on a limb here and say if pro cycling & the UCI believe sending a full peloton onto narrow gravel roads at full speed is perfectly 'safe', then they can send them out in heavy rain on a TT bike as well.

If all things are fair and equal.

They have done it before, Vuelta 2023 for example.

Yeah I mean I'll go and organise a one man protest outside the UCI if this stage is cancelled due to heavy rain. Start with the top. Just kidding but seriously unless the roads are flooded I don't see the issue. Brake earlier, take corners carefully. That is all.

And I swear if some of the 'cycling influencers' who pedal hype for gravel stages/cobble stages/chaos stages start invoking safety reasons here for a cancellation....

For sure. And remember: Remco won a rain soaked Olympic TT on cobbles, narrow stretches with standing water everywhere. Wout was there, Tarling was there. It's not a life safety issue but maybe will arouse personal self-preservation instincts. It'll favor the smoothest, chillest TT rider.

Roglic needs this TT
Perhaps, yes. But in all likelihood it won't help him too much. I could see Roglic winning 30 seconds on Ayuso but I could also see him losing 10, with the norm being a gain of 10-20 seconds. The battle with Del Toro should be a bit more in the favor of Roglic, but I wouldn't be surprised if Del Toro limits his losses very well today. He seems to be flying.

For Rog the importance of this day IMO isn't even about the top two UAE riders (I mean there's a scenario here in which Ayuso or Del Toro or maybe both even beat Rog and take time out of him. It can happen), no, the big issue for Rog is he needs to gap Carapaz, Tiberi, Yates bros and the others so that any offensive riding in the mountains next week against the pink jersey puts him in the best position among the GC riders on the attack.

Can't wait for todays action to start. Easiliy the most important stage GC wise this week considering the upcoming stages. With the rain, it would be good if the number of incidents doesn't overshadow the event too much, Time will tell.

Note the start times of the following riders. A condensed tier 1 block.

14:28:00PLAPP Luke
14:34:00VAN AERT Wout
14:36:00TARLING Joshua
14:37:00VINE Jay

My eyes will be glued to the telly.

Where do the cancellations rumours come from? Currently the forecast looks bad, but not right from the start. So I can't see why they wouldn't try at least and hope for the best.

Best thing to do would be to just start two or three hours earlier and in 1-minute intervals. Roads are closed since 8 anyway, but I guess TV deals etc won't allow an earlier start.

If the weather is better earlier then an Earlier start favours someone like a Hayter as an outside shot. Affini is a good shot as he is relatively early but I think he starts later than Hayter so depends on the weather. The pool of TT talent WVA, Tarling, Plapp and Vine going around same conditions will be a good indicator to just how big a difference any conditions in are with earlier/later riders

It's just rain. I don't see the issue, especially not for an ITT.
To be fair, there is an amount of rain which would make a cancellation reasonable. That said I think the only reason people are talking about it is because there is an official weather warning for Pisa, but I have no idea how serious rain has to be for that region to issue warnings.

Rain came 2 days later. A pity... I wanted Ayuso to be drowned like Titanic.
For today, I expect smaller gaps just like we had in 2023. Bike handling will be more important than sheer power if we have heavy rain. So not a good day for Roglic since his team is not good and he will have 3 or 4 GC riders in front of him before the mountains.

Toscana has been hit by a number of floodings over the years. Some of them caused casualties.
This is not a joke.
