He should have tried to help Carapaz close the gap, if he had the leg. But they are 5:30 down by now, I think Yates would have dropped them whatever they did. They had nearly caught him and then just couldn't close the gap as Yates was grinding away to the top.
The gap went up because they focusing too much on each other. Nobody wanted to give the other a free ride.

I dont think Yates win this either way.

Once Simon moved forward, he should´ve taken over from Carapaz.

But as I said, I don't blame him directly. It's the UAE car's fault.

Del Toro is 21 years old and he's no Pogacar. The situation has overtaken him.
The UAE team car seem to be suffering from the same disease as SD Worx: they're so used to being so OP that they've forgotten how to win by any other means, but the crazy strength of their riders has dug them out of any and all holes they've got into.

Now, they're being exposed as being extremely tactically vulnerable whenever they don't have the freak strength of Pogi to rely on.

I completely agree with all the other points, but I'm not sure we can say that Yates was clearly the strongest here. I'm not saying he wasn't the strongest for sure either, I just don't know whether he could have created a gap on Del Toro or Carapaz if one or the other wasn't present in the race
I mean, Carapaz had only 30s on Yates...the guy went off alone halfway up the climb, you know there's WVA in front and a decisive false flat...and you let him go like that. uh.maybe Yates wasn't so dominant, but in the last 2 kms of the Finestre , Carapaz and Del Toro pushed hard and recovered very few seconds

Del Toro will be here next year with Almeida.

Masters of disaster at work. Looking forward to next year ;)

UAE is such a disasterclass. I wonder who called the shot to glue to Carapaz wheels and do nothing to defend the jersey.

Well, polish commentators (Baranowski of all people) are shouting "disaster!" when in fact Toro sticked to the plan and shadowed Carapaz, who knew Yates will explode like that... and as others have mentioned multiple times Toro is not a tier 1 climber after all...

No, Carapaz was leading most of the mountain, he just couldn't close the gap and, even though he tried like 10 times, just couldn't loose del Toro.
If you are talking about after the climb, I maintain that they probaby were just to cooked to do anything. Do you really think they are letting this happen because they are idiots? Loosing *** 6 minutes?

Of all the great cycling stages this is possibly my favourite. It's just such a stunning story.
The film version of the redemption arc will gloss over the fact that only two stages of the race were any good, but the denouement will be epic.

They might have to reframe the bit about Adam to add drama though, in the film version he probably has to catch del Toro and then be conflicted about whether to help.
