Congratulations to Mads Pedersen for winning the sprint and overall performance on the climb.

It looks like this Giro is in between Rogla and Mads.

Yes, it's between the guy with 5 GT titles to his name and... the guy whose best GC placement in a GT is 98th.
Let's just completely ignore the 4 (well, 5, but one of them is teammates with the above-mentioned 5 GTs guy) who also have at least one GT title each.

@RedheadDane

Well, if we are playing this game ...

Albeit Vingo is still ahead, plus is one year younger, it's pretty close (117° vs 123°) according to PCS' system, but, then, the best danish cyclist is technically Rolf Sørensen:
#79 all time on PCS.

According to PCS's historical score, Kelly and Moser are better than Hinault.
It's the only list where I see that. No one considers it that way.

PCS all time ranking is probably the worst ranking ever made. A toddler randomly selecting photos of cyclist would come up with a better ranking than PCS.

Group of approx 90 riders did 1650 VAM for 30 minutes on the climb, 5.7-6w/kg weight dependent.

I know it's only stage 3 so it's hard to tell yet but from that it seems like the average climbing level is extraordinarily high. Looking forward to seeing how fast the top guys go, Roglic in particular looks like he's starving to death.

30 minute climb at 23 kph in perfect conditions in a large group is prime real estate for overestimating W/kg.

It does at least partially pass the eye test, though. In the Vuelta, Groves beat Van Aert from a 60-rider peloton that also contained Bittner, so basically all the remaining sprinters in that race. Here we had a group that was 50% larger and yet there were barely any sprinters. Yes, stage 3 versus stage 14 and all that, but either the climbing level here is really high or the Giro is still two levels above the Vuelta.

The sprinters that got dropped on Sunday aren't the sprinters who even appear at the starting line in the Vuelta. Then you have Kooij and Groves just being in terrible shape right now, and the fact that it was a 7% climb instead of a 4.5% climb. On Sunday nobody really seriously tried, while in the Vuelta Visma actually tried but the climb was just too easy to do much.

And while I generally don't think the week of a GT matters much for performance of the top GC riders, for an outcome like # of riders in a big group over a mid stage climb the difference between stage 3 and 14 is pretty big.

You don't think the likes of Kooij, Fretin and Bennett are similar types to Bittner?

I don't think # of sprinters getting dropped in different races on different climbs at different stages in the race makes for good analysis of the climbing level of a particular starting field.

But as for Bittner, I barely remember him, I don't think Kooij and Bennett are even similar sprinters, and I would have to google what the hell a Fretin is and honestly I can't be ***.
