I have not been watching the Giro as I havent a feed and been busy but UAE with McNulty, Ayuso, del Toro and Yates all withing striking distance of Rog have to try something at some stage or are they all going to wait for him to stomp up every hill
I don't know why they started pushing the pace in the last 20 km if they weren't going to launch someone in the finale? Of course I don't know how they're feeling or what their DS is telling them.

Imo they (mainly Ayuso, as Del Toro was postitioned well) got lost afterwards and going into the final climb.

It certainly looked like Del Toro had free reign today.
I don't think so. UAE stopped as soon as they saw Ayuso was too far behind.

Maybe they noticed there is 100m of elevation so they decided to push the pace in order not to risk being crashed by a desperate "sprinter" in the final.

I have the feeling Ayuso isn't very strong. Rogic needs to take advantage of that on Friday and not wait for Ayuso to improve over time.
I agree, i also had the feeling that Ayuso was quite fatigued in the final today, whereas ther GC guy looked more confortable.

one for the worst stage profilles thread. looks like a beast of a stage with tonnes of climbing, only to end up with a sprinter winning a bunched sprint...

It does look like a beast if you're only looking at PCS. However their graphic is terrible and they're not climbing double Carpegna as they make it look.

It certainly looked like Del Toro had free reign today.
He made multiple micro mistakes in last 3 k..can't know everything so he couldn't have known how many great sprinters would make contact, his sprint is decent but certainly not elite.
He has crushing, high cadence and outstanding jump from @1 k..maybe while it was slightly uphill he could have jumped, he really looked, good..and in the sprint he was there, started really late went to inside of Tudor rider maybe and put himself in traffic jam. He still had gas left in the tank
The overall impression that I get from Tom Pidcock , the guy can do everything on a bicycle, the guy has everything, including on and off road bike handling skills, respectable climber, and sleeper type sprinter..the guy has an outstanding sprint.
Stage 7 and 8 are going to shatter many rider's numbers.. On the 20+k climb lots of guys are going to crack for multiple minutes down.. No matter what the rest of the race turns into Pidcock and Pedersen are outstanding!!

Roglic was raging he looks good, Pidcock quality outing, Ayuso is racing pretty economically, stages 7,8 will require him to go pretty deep.. Don't know what EF has planned but going to need offense because if you try to trade blows w Bora or UAE, bad plan, and low land racing, Mads is not going to have much use after tomorrow and Trek has been racing really really good.. See how they go from sprint to climbing team..

Great comeback from Pedersen in the last kilometers and Vaček once again incredibly strong.

Zambanini with a very good sprint but was just too far back when he started it.

If you look at the GC on PCS, out of the top 34 (only top 34 up right now), there is only ONE rider you would not classify as either a GC rider or climber - and he is in pink with 1, 7, 1, 4 and 1 as his results in the first 5 stages.

It's actually quite remarkable, we're just forgetting that because it's "just" the Giro - and a part of the world elite is missing.
It’s very reminiscent of some of the Tirreno stage top 10s when Sagan was in his prime and he was winning ahead of top 10s filled with riders like Pinot, Nibali.

Congratulations to Mads Pedersen for a hat-trick.

Respect to Vacek for overall performance and turning down the offer, cleared to go solo, instead to lead-out Pedersen to another win. As for GC battle, UAE tried and meh, Rogla tried and reduction or cooperation just wasn't there, so mostly came down to some leg prep for Friday.

Exactly.

He has a ways to go to be Sagan level in terms of results, but then Sagan didn't have to contend with Pogacar and the two (now one) cross mutants.
