Giro d'Italia Stage 6: Fidenza - Marina di Carrara (172km)

Could see the first king of the mountains contenders emerge today. Not sure how many points are on offer (does anyone know where i can find them?) but some guys will be looking to start their tally. Moncoutie is 19 minutes down already so he may well be going for the king of the mountains now.

How interested will Liquigas be in keeping the jersey? They have a strong team, look at the TTT, but they have to support two GC guys through the whole race. Maybe they won't mind if someone takes the jersey off their shoulders for a few days, sort of like a Nocentini in the tour last year, in the expectation that they can win it back again later on.

Well, Vino did just attack his own team in the TTT, so it's not unprecedented.

I remember a worse case. In his first Tour, being inexperienced, Boardman was in yellow and desperate to wear it into england the day after the TTT.

His team could've won the TTT....but instead of longer slower pulls as he should've done, he took short powerful pulls and annihilated his own team.

Someone else got the jersey, the tour went into england and....funnily enough Sean Yates got the jersey the day the tour went back to France.

Also, thank you Moondance for starting these threads and providing a bit of commentary.

I will second the kudos to Moondance for the public service he is providing by putting up these posts every day. Here's hoping Moondance is right and we get to see some jousting going to Bedizzano and on to the finish.

Thank you guys :)

I'll be sure to keep it up.

All depends on how the peloton races. You can't properly predict these kind of 'in-between' stages.

If the favorites who lost a time already start today, then we could already see a small massacre. If they wait till sunday, then there's a good chance some breakaway wins or a group sprint with 40/50 men

I really don't think we'll see much more than a break ahead of a pack lazily rolling in, with a small chance that the pack actually chases and we get a 40/50 man sprint

Both Isso and Dekker say 40-50... I think it'll be less, but whatever.

Question to you two: If there are 50 or so people coming to the line together, does that group still have some good climbing sprinters left like Petacchi or Farrar... Maybe Pozzato.

Come to think of it Pozzato is a great guess who I completely forgot when making my original picks. He'll definitely be up there.

I think you guys might be over-estimating Petacchi, he's not a young man any more and hasn't shown much form so far this race. If it does come down to a sprint from a reduced bunch I don't think he'll be in the mix.

Farrar ought to be, with the form he seems to be in, and he'll be motivated to try and grab the points jersey before we hit the first uphill finishes. As for other sprinters, Greipel still seems to be struggling, so I don't expect much from him, and I really don't know how good a climber Greg Henderson is. I think today we might catch a glimpse of Sascha Modolo, although his 3rd at M-SR seems like an awful long time ago now.

Petacchi is climbing good though. Might have a chance at surviving. Old man or not.
When Cipo was an old man, he won San Remo and the Worlds, so I really don't see that as an argument, old men might be slower, but they are also thougher and can take more.

@Sasquatch: If Flens survives those climbs I'll win the Tour de France. No way. He is a rouleur/cobble guy and has too much weight to pull himself over the slightest bump

The climbs don't look that bad though. Anyone should get over them in a break, which i predicted flens to be in.
