A true horror film - about alcohol. 1-2 scenes will never completely convey the frightful wallop this film packs:

"The Lost Weekend" (1945) by Billy Wilder has Ray Milland falling apart over the demon alcohol. I learned some etiquette from this scene - do not drink your drink until the bartender returns with your change (in normal situations). Milland's character cannot wait. And watch the circle on the bar:

And next - drinking's benefits. Count the circles on the bar now:

If you get the chance, see this film!

Dialogue rules this scene from "Double Indemnity" (1944) by Billy Wilder, written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler from the novel by James M. Cain.

A flirting insurance salesman (Fred MacMurray) and a questionable wife (Barbara Stanwyck) talk insurance - accident insurance on the woman's husband. Film noir at its darkest ... and brilliant sexy dialogue:

Autism in the martial arts.

“Chocolate” (2008) by Prachya Pinkaew is a film about an illegitimate and autistic girl named Zen (Yanin "Jeeja" Vismistananda), simply by watching, can re-do just about anything she sees.

Her single-mother is dying of cancer and gangsters are denying her owed money. Zen seeks to collect – after watching Bruce Lee in some films. WATCH OUT!

Yanin "Jeeja" Vismistananda, about 23 years old then, plays Zen … and what a talent! Her athleticism is remarkable and I’ve highlighted her before.

The following is a tribute to Jeeja and is stunning. Jeeja is a gifted physical juggernaut. The choreography is very creative and this tribute has wonderful music:

P.S. Many actors, including Jeeja, WERE INJURED in the making of "Chocolate," as you might see in some of the action. The film's ending credits are shown over outtakes of some of the injuries. It's remarkable!

"Once Upon a Time in the West" - Sergio Leone's masterpiece. Each of the 4 main characters has its own theme.

Here is Jill's theme - she (played by Cladia Cardinale) arrives by train from New Orleans and no one meets her - they have all been murdered. She waits a while ... and then, as her theme begins, and inspired by a watch and a clock, she ... she gives birth to herself, as the camera sores over the rooftop to reveal the burgeoning town and Jill's first steps to becoming ... MOTHER OF THE WEST ... and gloriously melancholy music by Ennio Morricone.

Watch how the camera grows wings and soars along with the music, with Jill's journey - the rooftop shot @ about 3:00 is pure and grand cinema. And listen!

Enjoy!

Leone and Morricone is a perfect pairing. I'm at work right now so I can't provide a link but I've always found the opening scene to be one of the all-time best. :)

Peace on Earth? Not here, not today.

"Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx" (1972) by Kenji Misumi is the second of six classic chambara films about Ogami Itto (played by Tomisaburo Wakayama), the former #1 samurai for the Shogun, who was framed and is now an assassin, wandering the countryside with his child son. This clip is a visual summary of the kills in the film ... very 1970s and almost campy with spouts of blood (NOTE - GRAPHIC AND BLOODY):

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" ("Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo")(1966) by Sergio Leone has Ugly Tuco (Eli Wallach) trying to bathe without incident. Incident happens:

That was pretty good and I have not seen it before. I generally pass on romantic comedies that all seem like Meg Ryan and Hugh Grant proxies. Sandler is a funny guy but not an actor. But this clip is what we all have wanted to de once or twice in our lives.

It's really not a feel-good movie at all. The movie is seriously unsettling and has an amazing Philip Seymour Hoffman in it, who plays a complete psychopath.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that "Sandler, liberated from the constraints of formula, reveals unexpected depths as an actor. Watching this film, you can imagine him in Dennis Hopper roles. He has darkness, obsession and power."

A classic film from a classic book: "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940) by John Ford.

It's the story of the Jode family fleeing the Oklahoma "dust bowl" and farm foreclosures for what is thought to be a better life in California. Many hurdles lie along the way.

In this clip, the family wants to buy 1/2 a loaf a bread at a gas station diner - and some candy for the children. It starts off rocky, seems dismal and then ... smile. Hope. For humanity. Just a little hope goes a long way. Truck drivers. :)

Some sports comedy - the ice hockey way.

"Slap Shot" (1977) by George Roy Hill, is about a failing minor league hockey team that, as a last resort, uses the Hanson Brothers squad. The Brothers are young hitters, short on hockey skills but they take "checking" to a new level here:

In another game, the Brothers lash out before the game even starts - no on-ice officials to do anything:

"The Last Wave" (1977) by Peter Weir is a hauntingly creepy film about an Australian lawyer who, while defending Aborigines accused of murder, discovers prophetic rumblings in himself.

Watch this film on a dark, rainy night.

In this scene the lawyer, played by Richard Chamberlain, foresees ... the last wave:

A fine scene from a pretty good film:

"Final Destination 2" (2003) by David R. Ellis - a young woman has a premonition of death and escapes with her friends, only to be pursued by Death.

Here is the premonition scene - nicely edited graphic violence. Missing is the prior scene playing "Highway to Hell" on the car radio:

Back to the East and an epic fight between Jet Li and jackie Chan in "The Forbidden Kingdom" (2008) by Rob Minkoff. I must mention Yuen Woo-Ping, the fight choreographer - this is top-shelf movement with 2 fine artists:

That was/is a great movie. Loved it. I've always loved the drunken god/fighter character. I remember in one book, he was either named Ho Li, or Li Kao, and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop somewhere!

Good fight scene. Well - good if you like Chinese super-reality fight scenes! They can be tons of fun! This is a classic.

lactictac is really delivering the stuff. I've seen a number of the older movies and all are good. I'm not so serious.

As misunderstood as a Marx Brothers movie, Dodgeball http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdcJ_J7wzd8

I just saw Airplane and Airplane 2 again and found them aging poorly.

For me "The Other Guys" is a better Ferrell movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDaf-kILl2k

Of course, Monty Python's holy grail cannot go unmentioned. The Big Lebowski too. "Little miss sunshine" adds some drama to some great humor. I'm pretty sure those are well known.

I wonder how "leaving las vegas" has aged. I don't have time or interest in such dramatic stories. For sure, "the lost weekend" is great.

About as serious as I get is the Red White and Blue trilogy. For me, it was very good. The director is/was Krzysztof Kieslowski.

Back to the martial arts and some great choreography.

"Kill Zone S.P.L" (2005) by Wilson Yip has a cop fighting a crime boss. Headliner Donnie Yen does the fight choreography - and it is seriously engaging. This fight scene has Yen against Samo Hung, who is huge and moves ever so lightly:

And, an historical martial arts scene from a fine film, 50 years earlier:

"Bad Day at Black Rock" (1955) by John Sturges sees Spencer Tracy, playing a one-armed WWII vet investigating the disappearance of a Japanese-American farmer. In this scene, Tracy humiliates a large bully, played by Ernerst Borgnine, in an early Hollywood use of Asian martial arts:
