No anthem fires me up like the Marseillaise.

So true. Definately the best tune. I would say america if sea to shining sea was the anthem. Also Italy.

William of Nassau
am I, of German blood
Loyal to the fatherland
I will remain until I die.
A prince of Orange
am I, free and fearless.
The king of Spain
I have always honoured.

There's something for everyone in the Dutch anthem. So just let us win the Tour, and we'll all be happy ;)
haha. Funny to read a translation. Still, very nice. :)

Ill do mine.

Poland has not yet perished
So long as we live (ie it lives as long as we live, written during the quest for independence)
What has been taken from us
We will take with our sword. (ie dont f*** with us)

The verses then proceed to make direct threats at various countries - germans, muscovites, swedes. Before finishing with this great prophecy

The father, already crying (from joy)
Says to his daughter
Just listen, it seems that our people
Are beating the drums

ie. the revolution is coming. The reclaiming of independence is already in motion. Nothing can stop it. The great story, is about to begin...

Also legendry Austro Hungarian anthem -

This country tis of thee
Austria Hungary
Bow to your king.

ps. For the Uk God save the queen isnt to great. They should have Jerusalem. Or maybe Land of hope and glory.

Heroes of the sea, noble people,

Brave and immortal nation,

Rise again today

The splendor of Portugal!

Amidst the mists of memory,

Fatherland feels the voice

Of your great forefathers

That shall lead you to victory!

(x2)
To arms, to arms!

Over land, sea,

To arms, to arms!

Fight for the Fatherland

Against the cannons, march, march!

that is the shorter version of the portuguese anthem. used most of the times.

Oh, lyrically A Portuguesa is as good as any national anthem (though again the Marseillaise might have it beat on the violence front), and as good as most melodically, but the Marseillaise just has the most immediately catchy and stirring melody. The French, Italians and Germans do that best. Those national anthems are powerful, immediately recognisable and ones that really pump you up.

I think Hitch is right, God Save the Queen is about as far to the other end as you can get - far too slow and regal. Great for welcoming a monarch or something, but I can't imagine British people get their pulses going for that the same way as the French can for their anthem.

The 2011 Tour de France will be 25 years since the First American stood atop the Top Step in Paris. Since then, two other Americans have stood there and the Star Spangled Banner has been played a total of 11 times. More than any other National Anthem over those 25 years! (Denmark twice in comparision).

Anyway, do you think there will be a Special Event for Greg to mark this Anniversary?

It would be neat if Greg could join Bernard on the Alpe d'Huez Podium for the Stage Win and Yellow Jersey presentations! Maybe even hold hands omg:)

Or how about Greg being an honorary Chaperone for some AFLD "fieldwork".

Sure hope the ASO has something planned.

AMERICA!!!!
