Belgian news organizations are reporting that two people have been killed and at least 10 wounded Tuesday in a hand grenade attack in the eastern Belgian city of Liege.

New reports said that at about 12:30 local time (6:30 a.m. EDT) the man lobbed several grenades at a bus shelter in Place Saint-Lambert, a busy downtown square. They said witnesses reported four explosions and gun fire. Phone calls to Liege authorities were not immediately answered.

At least 10 wounded, one of the dead is believed to be one of several assailants who escaped from the local 'Palace of justice' prior to the attack.

2 dead and 25 wounded now, one of the attackers is reported dead by the BBC, who are quoting local Belgian media, and another has reportedly been captured.

Sorry, missed your post Amster.

It is not that far from me, so the local radio is full of this story. At this point it seems no one knows (or is saying) exactly what happened. WDR is saying they hear anywhere from 7 to 40 injured.

What a horrible thing.....

Lots of scattered news stories so far.

An official says the grenade and gunfire attack that killed two people and injured 64 in the Belgian city of Liege was not related to terrorism.

Interior Ministry official Peter Mertens said Tuesday that there was only one attacker, and that person had died in the incident. Various news reports had put the number of attackers at three.

Really terrible.

Two teenagers and an elderly woman were killed by this madman before he killed himself. There are 75 wounded. The attacker was known to the police.

Just saw some shocking journalism from the Telegraph claiming that it may have been a Pakistani attack a couple of hours ago, it has strangely disappeared now. I know that they're fall guys but to publish allegations with no claims, no investigation, no proof- sad journalism.

Just saw some shocking journalism from the Telegraph claiming that it may have been a Pakistani attack in response to an honour killing case a couple of hours ago, it has strangely disappeared now. I know that they're fall guys but to publish allegations with no claims of responsibility, no investigation, no proof- sad journalism.

They quoted a "paper" called the "Karachi Post" and a quick google would've been enough to verify the authenticity of the source, who as it turns out is a Twitter guy.

Hopefully the number of deceased doesn't rise sharply and in that case a bullet may be dodged as the potential for seriously high figures of casualty are extremely high.

Sorry Pistol, net is super slow and the edit took an age and I missed your post.

Hopefully the number of deceased doesn't rise too much and in that case a bullet may be dodged as the potential for seriously high figures of casualty are extremely high in crowded areas.

What a desperate looser. Making others responsible for his fail.
It turns out that he had a meeting/interview at police, shortly before he went full ***.
So I guess he has planned this thing, plan taking action depending on outcome of hearing. But wouldn't surprised if this was his everyday equipment when "going out".
I live in Aachen just around the corner, 15 miles away, on German side of the "Dreiländereck" (threecountrycorner" NL,B,GER), and I can tell you that Lüttich is no fun.

If you need weapons of any kind, you just go to Lüttich marketplace and buy them. Ugly city, dangerous area.

Meanwhile in Florence.....

An Italian man has opened fire in two markets in central Florence, killing two Senegalese traders and injuring three others.

The attacker, 50-year-old Gianluca Casseri, belonged to a far-right group, Italian media said.

He killed two men and injured a third in Dalmazia Square before opening fire in San Lorenzo Square, wounding two.

Casseri was later found dead in an underground car-park, having turned the gun on himself, police said.

Some more details about Liege. The numbers keep going up. :(
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/13/us-belgium-explosions-idUSTRE7BC10820111213
"He had a bag. He got a grenade out of his bag. He threw the grenade at the bus stop. Then he had a Kalashnikov (rifle). He shot in all directions. Then everyone ran to try to save themselves. Then he got a revolver out and put a bullet in his head,"

The victims were a 15-year-old boy, who died at the scene, a 17-year-old boy and a 75-year-old woman who died in hospital. A justice official said 123 had been wounded.

He was convicted in 2008 for the illegal possession of arms and for growing cannabis.
So tragic. So unnecessary. So discouraging to see how quickly so much damage can be done. :(

1) I don't agree about the uglyness of Liege, it has really stunning parts combined with poor areas and old industrial neighbourhoods.
2)But that's of course totally irrelevant, and has nothing to do with this case.

I watched the NBC nightly news earlier, and not a single mention of this horrible incident. Nothing on CNN either as far as I've seen.

An 18 month old baby has become this creep's fourth victim. Another 122 people are injured. No mention of this disaster on the US news is no surprise, sadly.
