Was the U23 class a thing when he rode? When did that start? You have established that he is between 50 and 60 years of age, so he was 22 sometime between 1982 and 1992, so maybe you can work it out from that.

Yep, Paul Kimmage. LS's positive ID came just before Del's very specific question.

What he won: 1981 and '84 national championships (amateur status), and 3 book of the year awards.

Still working in cycling? Indirectly (as a journalist, so not directly) and intermittently (because he increasingly writes about other sports)

So, @sir fly , when you asked whether he was 58, were you aware that it is his 58th birthday today? Although he doesn't make the birthdays list on the front page of PCS today.

One of those who is probably better known for his career post-cycling than for what he did on the bike. Just be glad I didn't go for clothes designer Paul Smith on the same basis. I thought that the combination of post-racing hint and nationality would get people there. And I guess it did.

And @RedheadDane , would knowing whether he is a Gaelic speaker have helped you narrow it down? For the record, I would have answered "As much as anyone else who attended school in Ireland in the '70s"
