"...Otherwise it's getting silly." He really is not obscure, nor is there really any reason yet to think he is. The only negative that you have about him is that he hasn't won a monument or a GT. There were three World RR Champions that fitted the criteria before you asked that. Among current riders, that wouldn't exclude 4 of the top ten, or half of the top 20, in the UCI rankings. Ignore that bit: I had forgotten the Mediterranean/non Soviet block country bit, but still 1 World Champ and 3 of the UCI current top ten (but they are obviously active) hadn't been excluded.

Was his terrain of choice hilly? I don't think 'Yes' or 'No' is really adequate.

Jérôme Coppel? No, but he was other of 2 plausible options left. Which means there is only one man it now can be...

Yesterday's birthday boy, J-C.

Hopefully not too obscure, Sir Fly. As to whether his favoured terrain is hilly, well he certainly never excelled in Ardennes type races, and his strengths were time trials and full scale mountains, but until he was about 32, his preferred sport was MTB cross country, and I guess that would be generally hilly.

So, welcome to the game Finn:
Male?
Active?
European?
