First off, it is "Eddy" not "Eddie"

And if King Eddy says the "No-Needle Policy" is foolish and dangerous,
then it IS Foolish and Dangerous.

FOOLISH. And DANGEROUS.

Does not matter if a cravat wearing wine sipping vagina twittering DS thinks it is good PR.
Does not matter if a beer chugging grand UCI poobah agrees that it is good PR.
Perception is NOT reality.

King Eddy will eat that PR and spit it out in disgust.
Foolish and dangerous. For many reasons.
King Eddy has spoken.
Pro Cycling is NOT a democracy.
That is reality.

but he is worse.

he is talking sh*t since 1965 judging pretty much anyone he wants because he is the "king" and anyone that comes close to one of his records is dirty\has to be dirty.

they can't come close to him\to his records "clean"... but he was always doped, taking much more advantages from drugs and the system than his opponents, always with the "top notch" stuff, and because of that, he will be considered by someone stupid (lots of people) the best ever...

how fair is that?

the champions of any era must have a different personality to dominate the pain that they must endure in order to be better than the others, they must have the desire to be the best ever in order to become the best of their generation.

but there is merckx... saying "if you want my place, you know what to do. i have the plebe by my side... find a new drug, a new way to dope in order to beat my records, otherwise...well, you will be in my shadow".

please.. i am sick of reading posts stating how awesome he was.. drinking alcohol and do that hour!!jeez... he was so cool!---- anphetamines you morons!! do you know the effect of them especially after\before drinking alcohol??rocket fuel!! unless you are as stupid as tom simpson, and die.------i condemn merckx.

not to mention the rules of today... 2 years ban from a positive.
Are you on acid or just pig-ignorant of cycling history?

Merckx was positive for amphetamines in an era where even the stars had to perform in the post Tour crits. That meant riding day in day out for August with ridiculous travelling in between. That said his palmares is not padded out with crit wins, rather every major race from start to finish of season. There isn't a rider alive, current or retired who even approaches his record. Not even Hinault is close but a distant second. However, you seem to dismiss his record out of hand.

Judging by your statement about the effects of amphetamine, I'll plump for the latter.

I think that gifting stages at the Giro worked on Contador's benefit. His situation is rather difficult now that he faced criticism for the "chain gate" and also the use of Clenbuterol. Besides his team wasn't the strongest one at the Giro and might not be the strongest at the Tour, so hey, why not keep making friends in the pro-peloton.

The Tiralongo "gift" wouldn't have even been seen as dramatic if his solo victory hadn't been threatened by Purito's pursuit, necessitating Contador's display of force and dominance in pursuing the chasers, passing them and then escorting Tirlongo to the line. Instead of being criticized by Merckx, he should have been marveling at Contador's ability to control the race on his own. A faithful former domestique is given the hi-sign before the stage to go for the stage win and the former captain does everything his power to make sure it happens. This being Tiralongo's first win makes it even more dramatic and touching a gesture.

May I remind all who's camp Merckx's allegiance presides and by nature of that allegiance, his perspective is skewed to the point of severe distortion.

Your post illustrates an example of why we should all be uncomfortable with hero worship. Religions get started that way, if given enough time. Willful perception at one point in time can evolve into dogma in the future. It takes courage to call people out on that.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if Armstrong had chased down a load of riders and then escorted a former team mate to the line...

To me it was akin to a politician kissing a baby, nothing more than a calculated PR gesture to show that he was human but ultimately re-enforcing just how chemically enhanced he was.

It wasn't done to help Tiralongo, or as a reward, or as a show of sportsmanship, it was done by Dertie to make himself look slightly less of a **** than normal.

Your post is courageous also, Deagol.

After all, it is a small and slippery slope between recognizing AWESOME Cycling Palmares/Insights and establishing a religion based on Human Sacrifice and Cannabalistic Consumption.

Your post is courageous, Deagol.
But resistance is futile

Bow Down before Eddy.

Apart from the fact that Eddy has obviously hit his head on the floor too often and is suffering from the after effects.

Merckx is as old skool as they come. How many times did he test positive? And that was in the days when there really was no dope testing.

As for Dertie gifting stages - given that Dertie was being given a kicking for taking the **** and being as dirty as they come, he was gifting stages in a bid to look slight less of a **** than he normally does. It was PR and nothing less, I am quite sure that Riis was in his ear telling him not to make it quite so obvious.

As to Eddie - I can appreciate that. I have way too many dents in my head for any reasonable person. I can see where he's coming from. Dumb is as dumb does...

As to the Clentador - like I said, on-the-road PR. And, at least he shows a bit of class... Why be a total d*uche-bag when you don't have to be?

That being said, he actually may be a d*ouche...

from all the interviews i have seen with contador he has never looked like a ******. and i am talking the interviews he gives on spanish television in spanish where he feels comfortable not the english ones where he is clearly nervous :p and yes i am fluent in spanish.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0jN-rZT1HQ

this one was pretty good, one of the best moments is when the presenter asks him what he thinks about during the race and he answers "about everything" then the presenter says "well then you also think about sex" and contador blushes a bit and says "ya pretty much" the entrance is a joke every1 here will understand i think . also el pistolero posted an interview with dutch subtitles a few weeks ago where he talks about his brother and his big crash that almost killed him that is pretty good.

p.s. after watching the interview again i remembered that its actually pure gold. contador answers questions about every little weird thing about cycling, like why do they wear clothes so tight if it is just to show their pachage, why they use such uncomfortable saddles and if his *** doesn't hurt afterwards, why do they still ride like 2 hours on they days they are supposed to be resting. the presenter actually says "joder! que forma de descansar tan rara" which pretty much means "fvck!! what a weird way to rest"

p.p.s. the interview is in 3 parts that should be easy to spot on the right bar. in part 2 he shows the scar on his + the marks of the plates and screws he has in his head and in part 3 he gives a pratical lesson on how to take a pee while riding :p

Merckx never gave a stage / race away in his whole career & never asked for anything in return. The idea of doing so is completely inexplicable to him. He just doesn't 'get' Contadors gifts.

He has a point about the 'no needle' policy - it's absurd. If riders are allowed to take vitamins, painkillers, glucose etc then to my mind it's irrelevant how they are consumed.

His relationship with doping is much more 'complex'. I can't really find it in myself to be over critical of his doping activities during the 60's & 70's. It wasn't taken seriously at all in those days & it's unfair to judge Merckx by todays standards. That being said the fact that Merckx is chummy with Dr Ferrari (who 'treated' the boy Axel) & Armstrong is 'unfortunate'.

Merckx has the most complete understanding of professional cycling. Using needles for re hydration vitamins, etc. are likely important for the well being of GT cyclists. Because a supplement is injected does not mean that it is a PED.

The problem is that the cyclists are not just injecting vitamins and hydrating themselves with needles. They have used that as their excuse to dope all the time. So maybe third party doctors should be in charge of diagnosticating or giving such vitamins and hydration.

There are many ways to consume PEDs other than through the needle. If for instance a cyclist need use anti biotics due to road rash would we not want him to use it intervaneously for his or hers health safety. I saw films where the masseur lathers up a riders chamois with a creme, to me that was suspect, however I would never say, let the cyclist ride themselves raw, that is inhumane.

Yes, riders will NO longer be able to inject vitamins and minerals and iron.
NO longer can they hydrate and re-energize their dehydrated anemic bodies.

After all, this is NO longer the 70/80/90/00's when it WAS legal AND beneficial.
Rider's health mattered back then BTW.
So isn't Banning needles for this healthy purpose DANGEROUS?

"But riders will no longer be able to inject PEDs"
C'mon, that is plain FOOLISH.

When a rider decides to cheat, he will cheat.
A cheater will not refuse to inject EPO just because the needles are illegal lol.
"sorry doc, I am not allowed to inject that EPO. Darn!"
C'mon, he will cheat by using EPO with cheater needles.
Cheat Cheat Cheat.

No Needle PR Policy = Dangerous and Foolish
Thank you Eddy, may I have another.

I know that you love to knit pick words so I ask you where did I say that they should ban needles?. I said that maybe race doctors or third party doctors should do that in case of emergency.

If a rider is very sick and needs shots maybe he should not be in the race in the first place. If a rider gets very sick after two weeks of racing or gets very anemic maybe he is not fit to ride the Tour de France. Hey, a lot of us are not Tour de France material, only a few natural gifted ones are and I don't want to change that with recuperation meds.

Would you mind not quoting the trolls? It is easy to write their names if you want to address them.

You know I thought my flatmate hated Contador a lot, but that is nothing compared to MJM.

I'm pretty easy on him considering he is a lying drug filled little **** whose been protected his whole career by corrupt and nationalist ****s and who would sell his own grandmother into prostitution if it would get him a fix and a victory.

He's like the old Nixon joke.

Q: How can you tell Dertie's lying?

A: His lips are moving.

Mrs John Murphy the human Polygraph. not saying he is clean because i highly doubt he is but still your hate is hilarious

But not as hilarious as your inability to recognise when someone has their tongue in their cheek. Perhaps if you unwrapped yourself from the flag and took your head out of Dertie's **** you'd maybe see things more clearly.

It's not my fault that you're cycling's equivalent of a Justin Bieber fan.
