"I’m in a lucky position because I don’t get a contract because of my nationality but because I perform well on the bike. It’s irrelevant the nationality of the team I go to."

Also Wiggin's emphatically tweeted that Tour 2012 is a priority:

"1 year to go to London 2012, but more importantly 11months to go the 2012 TDF!"

followed by

"The TDF is the start of my olympics 5 weeks of pain!"

For what its worth.

His 5 weeks of superstarvation, i cycle around 1000 km a month and my untrained biceps of my neglected upper body is even biggar than his calf

No chance Cav is leaving the TDF early.

The problem is that the Olympics next year comes shortly after the Tour. If Cavendish rides the entire Tour, vieing for (and winning) the green jersey, he won't be able to peak again in time for the Games.

So, while he might try to complete both, it sounds as though he is going to give high priority to his Olympics prep, which will mean leaving the Tour early. But we shall see.

I'm not so sure I agree with Cav here. Yes, he will get paid regardless of where he goes because he performs, but it is NOT irrelevant where he goes. Even if Katusha pays twice as much as anybody he'd be crazy to go there. I don't think he'd do as well on a French team.

Cav needs a team where English is the 1st langauge and they'd be willing to commit to a sprint train more often than not.

Well done quoting him out of context, you could be a journalist.

Road race is 1 week after the end of the tour - no issues at all in taking a day or two off, training gently and being ready to go. He's a sprinter, peaking is not quite so much of an issue. His top end isn't going to disappear in a week.

Cav is a very intelligent lad contrary to what he sounds like.

What would happen if he wins gold on "home" soil? Its a massive thing for him, if that means a sacrifice of a Green jersey for one season, then so be it, he knows he is good enough to win it back.

Most of what I have heard and read in the last few months has left me more inclined he'll be off to Sky. Everything I heard in the interview today (and it came across far more verbally than when it's in writing) pointed towards him staying at HTC.

He's going to break down barriers on Nationality preference with his new team selection: He's going to Euskaltel-Euskadi:D

yeah I agree

I think he is going to Sky. While it might not make sense for the team so much as they have a mix of GC and sprinters etc .... he wants that Olympic gold.

Sky support British cycling, so their goals are the Olympics as much as the tour. Other teams not so much

...and he will learn to climb mountains and become an all-rounder. Not a GC contender mind you... that would be asking way too much. :D

I dunno though, it's happened before.

I'm still not sure how this is going to go. On the one hand, if he was going to Sky I can't see why it hasn't been announced already. Sky abides by the 1st August rule very strictly so I assumed they would have made a huge stink about signing Cavendish two days ago, while he was still somewhat in the public eye after the great Tour he had.

The lack of any announcement so far makes me think that Bob Stapleton has a new sponsor lined up for High Road and they are waiting to announce the new sponsor and the re-signing of Cav at the same time. That would make sense of the delay, BUT there are riders leaving HTC like rats from a sinking ship, which casts doubt on the idea of a new sponsor.

I agree with all that you've said but seeing as only 4 riders have left so far in a normal year would these be viewed as natural wastage. In past years they have lost between 5 - 10 riders without raising any eyebrows. When names like Tony Martin & Goss anounce that they're leaving that's the time to worry. Although at the start of the tour Tony said that he would prefer to stay at HTC but had been looking at other teams just in case.

Yeah thats what i had been wondering. Plus could it be possible that new sponsors are not paying as much so the wage bill is being trimmed?

Yes, and two of those rider are the Velits, and although they're not as "OMG not without my brother" as the Schlecks, they do seem to like being on the same team, so you can count them as one rider. ;) I think Quickstep might have got a "buy Peter, get a Martin free" deal. If so that's a good deal for OPQS I think, he'll be useful support in the Classics.

I suspect Martin Velits will require a salary and equipment of his own, and although quite how the UCI's system for generating rider reference numbers allows for it I'm unsure, twins still count as two bodies towards the team maximum.
