Headsets - best brands to use?

I need to replace the headset in my bike, whilst I still can ride it, it does need replacing soon, and I'm wondering, what is the best brand to use? I have a Cane Creek headset.

CHRIS KING for any application. Will outlast any component on your bike, probably your frame too.

I have to say my Cane Creek has lasted at least 3 or 4 years. What are Ritchy like? I know a few big ProTour teams use them.

Remember what a headset does. Basically holds onto your fork and allow smooth rotation of the handlebars thru about 15 or so degrees of movement. CK are nice, last HS you will buy but the low $ ones at Ritchey and others do the above well also.

I have always thought of a headset as a consumable much like a tire. Some will last longer then others but all will need to be replaced. CK without a doubt is the leader in the headset market. But it comes down to price versus replacement. If you replace a Cane Creek headset every three years with a cost of $40 but you replace a CK headset every 10 years with a cost of $120 it is close to a wash on expenses (other than labor).

I have used Chris King headsets (external) on three bikes for the past 5-6 years. Road and mtn. Best thing about them is you just install them and forget about them. No problems at all to date. Have heard similar reports about the CC110 that RDV mentioned, but haven't tried it.

What headset type do you need? External, integrated, or internal? That will definitely affect what options are available to you.

Integrated. It needs to get here ASAP. I can still use my bike, but it still needs replacing. So Chris King is still the best one to use?

Also, what is the best website to use? In the past I have used probikekit.com. But looking at JensonUSA.com, Cane Creek 110 (IS) Intergrated 1 inch 1/8 Headset, I can get get it for $126 AUD (about $116US), which is $30 cheaper then on probikeit. So has anybody dealt with Jenson, and if so, what are they like? They seem pretty good and they ship to Australia. That Cane Creek has a 110 year warranty. I'm a person who likes to spend a bit more money, but has something that lasts a long time, rather then some cheap and nasty piece of crap, that only lasts the time, the warranty lasts for.

I haven't seen too many Chris King headsets for sale online, if anybody knows somewhere good, would be a help. At this stage I'm looking at the CC 110.

This was the headset I ordered:

CANE CREEK 110 HEADSET at JensonUsa.com

I got it today, and despite being under the impression it was an integrated headset, turns out it is an external (it doesn't say anywhere what it is). I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew it was external, and I typed it into google with that headset under intergrated. So it looks like it was my own fault (?).

So I can send it back to them, which is a hassle to send something back to America from Australia, thankfully they have a 30-day return policy, in which I can get a refund or an exchange. Or I can get a mate to sell it for me on ebay and cut the losses and get my local bike store to get it for me, even though it will cost more. It is going to be a nightmare sending it back because it is getting close to the Christmas holidays, and I'm worried the problem may not get solved until the new year, bearing in mind it is going to take a week to get there.

So any advice, before I do anything.

Why do you feel the need to spend $120 when it is probably just the bearings that need replacing. If you do this whenever necessary, your headset will last for years.

Local bike store....what's your time worth? Can you put a price on inconvenience? Nothing like looking at the bike and saying, 'you need this' whatever gadget.

Is Cane Creek really "Made in the USA' as it says on the box, or is it really made in China, sent back to Americam and put in it's box?

If it says US made, then I expect it is. They would get in a load of trouble if caught going around country of origin laws. Now, that said, all the pieces could be made someplace else, but finished and assembled here and they might get away with it.

The US does still have a decent components industry (love my Thompson seatpost) with Chris King probably best known.

My Bontrager wheels, I know that the rims and spokes were made in Taiwan, but then shipped back to America and then finished. At least what I have been told anyway (and the person who told me has a lot of links in the bike industry and has visited factories in Italy where they make wheelsets etc.).
