the fool also said he was better friends with Lemond than he ever was with Armstrong.

the saddest of all, though, were the two journalists doing the interview.
neither the will nor the capacity to put any heat on verdrug'm.

They weren't that bad imho.

Too bad they didnt let Mart Smeets do it ;)

you've got low standards if you call Dione de Graaf "not bad".
not bad to look at, sure.

That interview was a PR victory for Hein. He's way too clever for journalists like these.

It was not bad for prime time national teevee, that is what I am saying.

They 'slammed' him time after time with his own contradictionary statements of the past. I liked the part on EPO in 1997 where Hein was so proud, then switching to the 1999 quotes where he states EPO is a massive problem.

Everyone with a tiny bit of cycling knowledge saw he was rambling, that is enough, for now.

I agree. He ran circles around those two clowns. Someone who doesn't know a lot about cycling probably thought that Verbruggen was an honest and decent guy, who just had the bad luck to preside over cycling during a dark period, despite his best intentions to change the sport for the better.

They could barely make the bribes that the UCI received from Armstrong stick. You have to be a really bad interviewer to manage that.

Agreed also. I watched the whole interview and Hein did a smooth job. Once or twice he was pressured but he wormed his way out well.

The one issue the informed cycling public is left with though is the question of the CURRENT situation. Which is no better than where we were before with Lance. In fact it is worse. We now have rampant team and individual doping happening, now totally obvious for all to see, with no tests/testing protocols that can pick this up, AND a more knowledgeable and disillusioned fan base...

* doping is because of gambling -Gambling is not a cause, but a catalyst and takes advantage of a broken system
* UCI ranking stopped the selling of races - Huh?
* doping controls do not work - Unless UCI controls the resultss of the doping controls
* WADA is BS - UCI is BS, and Nein is full of it
* UCI did the most on anti - dope of all sports [repeats this about 300000 times] - UCI created two systems that provided structural facilitation of doping; 50% HCT Test and the BP while refusing to sign the WADA code
* Armstrong was not his friend - Right, and they weren't going to buy the Tou together either
* no positive in Switzerland - Switzerland, where is Switzerland?
* cycling is much cleaner now - You just have to clean the lint off your glasses and you will see it is much cleaner
* Armstrong was never suspect, he only had doubts - Doubts that they could forever make the positives disappear
* Armstrong 222 times controlled - That plus USADA's numbers puts the total at still < 1/2 Armstrong's claims
* AFLD always controlled Armstrong in the Tour, not UCI - TOTAL BULLCRAP
* the money for the blood testing machine was not the first donation - The Credit institute of Lance Armstong is a great place to get money
* some journalists [Walsh] are conspiracy nuts - Some in the UCI leadership [Phat and Nein] are completely corrupt

Especially loved his body language.

Further to RR's post, here is an article that reports that Marie-George Buffet, sports minister at the time of the 1998 Soccer World Cup, says that she and the French government were under intense pressure (from the press) not to perform drug testing on the French team in the leadup to the competition. She says that at no time did her ministry give instructions not to do testing.

She then goes on to reveal that she had to write a letter to the attention of Hein Verbruggen to state that the French anti-doping laws would be suspended if France obtained the 2008 Olympic games. Meetings were held between French IOC members Killy and Drut and then Prime Minister Jospin to ensure the letter was done. Even after the letter was handed to Verbruggen (at the top of the Eiffel Tower) there was continuing pressure on Jospin.

It's very saddening to hear that Buffet and Jospin (two hardliners, normally) had their arms twisted by that a**hole and for nothing too. I wonder if "Dede la Sardine" (André Guelfi) didn't claim he had made France lose the 2008 Olympics too, possibly because he was being investigated for one of the numerous financial scandals he was part of...

It is disturbing that Verbruggen's attempts obstruct the testing has been known for over a decade

More recently, the NHL pressured the Turino Olympic committee to suspend / avoid Italy's sport fraud laws during the 2006 Games. This is well documented, and I am not going to bother citing sources.

The point being is that as bad as this is for cycling, they are not alone.

Moreover, that this was done after a successful bid - when there should have been less pressure to comply - and not, as in Hein's case, before the IOC's decision on which location would have the winning bid.

Clearly France did not win any summer Olympic bid. Not even after providing Hein with these assurances.

Hurrah for that. We escaped 10s of billions of IOC imposed wasteful expenses for a 2 week dopefest.

It, of course, begs the question what was arranged to secure the winning bid.
