Lets have a poll.

First cyclocross of the season for me on sunday and the first race for me since, erm, 1993 :/

Training regime has gone to pot, august and september went fine, but then in october weather has interfered and ive just realised four days before the race that i havnt actually been out on the bike for 8 days.

Couple this with the fact I suffer anxiety and therefore breathlessness, and im on new meds which may or may not make me drowsy (but then if i dont take them I have insomnia), Im also awaiting a blood test to see if I am anemic.

Counter this against the fact that I am in fact slightly psychopathic and enjoy a bit of pain so sometimes my determination outweighs my ability.

So how will I do?

dude, yer own poll. the audacity! are you sure yer not Cav?:D

well everyone else is creating polls, i thought i would. At least im able to laugh at myself as im expecting the results to be last, or fail to finish :D

Git btw :p

What you want to do is try to get lapped by the winner just as the both of you are coming onto the finishing straight. This not only gives you the highest classification for the least effort but more importantly insures that the beer is not all gone before you are done with your race.;)

I'm guessing you'll completely under-perform, but retire to a really nice bus.

Just like your hero's:D

Haha! Finally, someone posted a decent poll. I say bottom third, muscle memory will come to the rescue.

On a side note, I take some benzo's for anxiety. I usually take them early on a race night so I can sleep, but still have enough in my system for the calming effect on race morning...Or you could just take a shot before the start. Please keep up posted.

I won't say 'fail' dim, I figure you'll have the nuts to show up, throw a leg over the bar, and complete the course. I also figure anybody who won't ride at 0 degrees will get slaughtered in a cross race! Have fun, set the mood lights to raging red, and good luck.

Well the training program is going well.. after not picking up the bike for 8 days today managed a grand total of.. erm...

5 laps at about 3k each of a local circuit mixing grass/gravel/road, ave h/r about 152, max about 172 so a decent work out.. but.. .

got blown completely off the bike once, and dangerously close to traffic and horses on two occasions so retired while i still had my dignity.. wind speed 42.5 apparently. :/ - I came home when it got the point i actually feared for my own safety.

Training for today has been reduced to kinetic combat and kinetic aerobics on the eyetoy.

I may have to rethink my vote.

If you finish anywhere near the top 10 you will probably get your own thread in the clinic too!

I wanted to pick "Withdrawn From Race By Team for Dodgy Bio Passport Readings" but that doesn't seem to be an option?! :D

Im banking on large numbers of retirements and weather similar to K-B-K.. probably my best chance. the weather up here is seriously grim right now.

What's the race distance?
I root for you, Dim, but unless you're seriously into pain, I fear you'll be among the last 10th percentile. So what? Have fun! For those of us who'll never be a Tour contender this is what it's all about; giving it a go, keeping active, staying out of diabetes and excessive blubber, having fun.

Now step up to the plate and make us all proud!

1 hour.. so depends how fast you go, im just going to ride round in cirles for half an hour.. then again, was thinking earlier should just blitz it at the start, if you can be in the first 30 going into the first funnel point then you have more chance of staying there than if you dawdle off the start line and just let everyone go.

todays alternate training method in the absence of a turbo trainer.

Im knackered after an hour of that. Absolutely no benefit to cyclocross but hey.. im unorthadox

Bottom 1 percentile then, if that's your cardio workout! :D
Plus-points for the odd feck-off. Might come in handy in a pinch on the track, though.

Seriously, get a pulse-clock, establish max bpm, work out your zones, go to it. A five or six-hour ride on sats and sunds, low intensity, will build your stamina no end.

WTF was that? Ok, here's your new strategy: give it 100% at the start and get into the tough stuff among the top 5-10%. When riders with more hp try to pass you, resort to your off-the-bike video training and bash them on the head. Yelling "fukking die... basterds" per your training regimen will win you more support from the cowbell club. Guaranteed, everyone there will remember you.

I have a hrm, and i use it. actually youd be surprised, an hour in the house with eyetoy and the average hr was 147, max was 162.. its surprising. i was well within the 140-160 zone all the time (my max is about 180 but i dont go over 170 as thats when panic kicks in) :D

five-six hour rides are out. Firstly i have a marriage to consider, and also five-six hour training riders for what is basically a one hour race seems a little excessive.. I dont particularly need the endurance.

its all fun

im am wondering about the legality of just waiting for the leader to lap you and then following him around.if not, will go for the bike over the shoulders, block everyone behind approach

As a last resort, consider attaching your transponder somewhere on the favorite's bike without raising suspicion. Suck his wheel on the last lap an' you're home free! Seriously, if that's what gets your pulse ticking along to the merry tune of 147 bpm, average, you're out of shape. That would get me from my resting value of 46bpm to 85 bpm, definitely not more. Shaqqing my wife rareley gets me over 60, mind. :D
