Its his first grand tour, hes 21, and hes placed, 6th (stage 3), 5th (stage 6), 5th (stage 8), 5th (stage 10) without a leadout train, pretty much just Russ Downing as his leadout. (and four other podiums this year with no leadout)

I would say thats a pretty promising performance. Yes, he may only be the 5th or 6th best sprinter in the giro, but hes young and hes coming in consistently in the top five every day.

Hes only 21 and technically still a neopro

I think that Appollonio is overrated. Was it last year's tour de vendée when he could barely stay on Haussler's wheel annd got beaten finally by Koldo Fernandez?

Add a second place to that

Sky already have several world-class sprinters, all of whom are younger than 25 and could improve with time. Buying Cavendish would be a waste of money in my opinion, and they should rather spend that money on buying a few climbers.

I don't see any of their sprinters as 'world class'. Definitely 'elite level', but none of them I see as consistently beating Cavendish, Farrar, Petacchi, you know, the world's best any time soon (maybe Guardini can be added to this list soon). Sutton, Henderson, Swift and now Appollonio all look to be very quick - but do they have that wow factor?

Besides, they're rumoured to have bought Henao, so that's the climbing problem sorted.

It's a British team, Cavendish is the marquee British rider alongside Wiggins. If Sky can get him, they will get him.
