Humanplasma: over 180 athletes involved?

Update on the humanplasma case: Austrian newspaper Kurier quotes an "anonymous insider" who says the doping clinic had 184 athletes as clients between 2002 and 2006

It should be noted that Kurier were the first to report on the doping clinic about 3 years ago and later the first to name names.

In both occasions no one believed them. And in both cases they turned out to be dead right.
So by now we should give them a lot of credibility.

They also say that these 184 different athletes are between 2002 and 2006, so the full number is likely to be higher.

In an article which appeared yesterday, the Kurier also quotes a witness who says that 184 was "a fantasy number" and it was more likely 50 athletes.

Still a lot, though.

basically the entire Rabo "A" team.

Well, also allegedly a number of winter sport athletes, too, plus track and field.

Odessa Leipheimer had a big mouth about one particular rider who was doing blood transfusions back in 2001? Or was it 2002. Rabo started early, a long time ago. Wonder if they were using Wien then.

could be apocryphal. but my source got it straight from her mouth.

You got a lot of good sources.

Let's see, that makes all the Menchov placings in Grand Tours tainted with blood doping I guess. Including his two Vuelta wins. The last one was in 2007, but he was probably using the "Human Plasma" services.

Spanish docs>Humanplasma?

It's worth noting that Levi never racked up the kind of results he has gotten with Bruyneel, before and after going to Rabo. Fuentes was apparently the best in his era, but there is some doctor or team of doctors that seems capable of topping both Humanplasma and Fuentes.

So we will expect that to be swept under the carpet as well? Move along people, nothing to see here.

Menchov went from winning the white jersey in about 2004, and something like 12th overall, to finishing about 50th in 2005. Stupid results.

Difference between a solid doping plan, and just a maintenance doping plan with recovery therapy

Winning the white jersey at the Tour hardly ever dictates future performances in the race.

Most white jersey winners fall short as serious Tour contenders later in their careers.

1999 Benoît Salmon (FRA) Casino – AG2R Prévoyance 16th

2000 Francisco Mancebo (ESP) Banesto 9th

2001 Óscar Sevilla (ESP) Kelme–Costa Blanca 7th

2002 Ivan Basso (ITA) Fassa Bortolo 11th

2003 Denis Menchov (RUS) iBanesto.com 11th

2004 Vladimir Karpets (RUS) Illes Balears – Banesto 13th

2005 Yaroslav Popovych (UKR) Discovery Channel 12th

2006 Damiano Cunego (ITA) Lampre–Fondital 12th

2007 Alberto Contador (ESP) Discovery Channel 1st

2008 Andy Schleck (LUX) Team CSC Saxo Bank 12th

2009 Andy Schleck (LUX) Team Saxo Bank 2nd

Since 1999 only Contador and Schleck have done well as contenders for the overall while winning the white jersey. Basso can be disregarded as having ridden "under the influence" so to speak.

He goes from annihilating the field in the Giro in 2007 to what he is now, a good stage race rider but certainly not a challenger for the top spot, not even in a watered-down field like the Vuelta had this year.

That's a good question to ask cyclingnews; it's medium with journalists and they can investigate it.

Exactly, the list could have been titled "Men who needed the services of a gynecologist."

EVERY top 30 Grand Tour ride since 2002 accomplished with epo or blood refills. 3,000 + top riders.

On this occasion I think bigboat is close. Not every rider will be doped, but in a three week tour almost all those within 30 minutes of the leader must be doped. How can you compete with an increase of 10% difference in power, anaerobic threshold and resultant gains in recovery.

As a an update:

Humanplasma denies that any transfusions have taken place inside their buildings or otherwise on their premises. They assert that of only 30 athletes, blood has been drawn, but which has never been treated and/or reintroduced in the subjects bodies.

On top of that, the Austrian IRS suspects Humanplasma of deliberate tax evasion, for which another, separate investigation has started.
