He said before the Giro that he will not be riding for GC but will be looking for stage wins. So nothing has changed.

Yeah.He is very underrated.His palmares is pretty comparable to Valverde,though Valv has the better palmares since:
4 Fleche and 2 San Sebastian are better than 1 Amstel
And Valv has won Dauphine twice,Catalunya and Romandie once.Though Cunego won the Giro rather than Vuelta.
But it is pretty disgusitng that his 3 Lombardia wins are getting ignored.

I was just talking about today's Cunego, but I mentioned the fact that he was one of the strongest riders in the 2015 Giro dell'Emilia, he dropped everyone but it was too late, he couldn't catch the 3 attackers, it would have been a great race to add to his palmares.
Yes, his palmares as a classics rider is underrated, but his decline as a classics rider started even earlier, his last great season was 2010, after that he only won the 2011 Giro dell'Appennino (also know as the big Androni fail) and finished 4th in the 2014 edition of Strade Bianche.

I think he could have achieved so much more than he has. It's insane that in terms of big wins he is very comparable to Valverde. But Valverde has more wins in smaller races and has kept that high standard for a longer period of time.

Cunego outsprinted Evans, Basso and some other rider from a group of 4.

But, incidentally, not knowing how a specific classic unfolded in a specific year doesn't mean all these posters hate classics.

If only there was some part of the season where there were lots of classic races, and almost every thread on the forum was dedicated to discussing them. I don't know, and I realise that this idea is completely unrealistic, but I think they could call it something like...classics season. Hey, maybe they could hold it in the spring! Then we might talk about classics. After all, there's loads and loads of classics on RIGHT NOW that are just getting ignored, and it's not like there's a GT on or anything.

Damiano Cunego was a rider whose leg strength exceeds his aerobic capacities. Therefore he was primarily a puncher. Therefore he was primarily a specialist of hilly classics. Therefore, it's pretty logical to expect his classic results being discussed on a thread that is dedicated to him.

He was actually even struggling on San Fermo della Battaglia and was a few seconds behind.But he came back in the descent and won nonetheless.It was a very impressive win.

The most peculiar thing about Cunego is that he still hasn't won any Giro stages after 2004. It is almost amazing that a rider with Cunego's abillities hasn't manage to win a single stage in 11 years in the GT on home soil!

Maybe he has his sights set on the Dolomites stage. Normally a group should be let go there. Good chance for Cunego to hunt down some points for the blue jersey and mrsybe even win the stage.

That's what he said on Eurosport, he intends to do this Giro. Winning a stage and defending the blue jersey!
