iPhone assistance please!

My 2.5yr old iPhone 3G has started playing up, in that it sometimes sends incoming calls directly to my voicemail without ringing when network isn't a problem. The voicemail then sometimes doesn't tell me there's a message for a few hours. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything I can do to remedy it? I'd prefer not to have to replace it as I'm on a nice cheap tariff at the moment!

21/2 years old: that's a miracle. I thought they only lasted just past their warranty; a bit like SRAM.
