I agree with those who compare Landa to Froome 2012. From nothing he finds himself capable of challenging a rider like AC. I'll say again "from nothing" because Landa's best placement is a 28th at the 2014's Vuelta. Even more out of nothing than Froome because Chris at least got a 2nd place at the 2011 Vuelta before his Tour exploit.

So you agree with no one? People compare him to 2011 Froome. There are parallels but Froome's transformation is probably the least expected, most shocking transformation in the last decade and easily tops Landa's.

Wait, that *was* the GT where Froome came from nowhere.

Landa needs to tone it down. Much too obvious what is going on for the world to see. Vino cheering I'm sure though.

How about to merge this thread w/the clinic one? I mean no one mentions the D word here, but it´s too obvious what the talk about is...

Just a suggestion

Re:

Are people really comparing this to Froome?

Its not even close.

Firstly Froome came 2nd in the tt just behind Tony Martin.

Landa lost over 4 minutes, finishing in the 50's with guys who were riding it as a mini rest day.

Secondly Landa was a talent as a youth.
He is 25 years old and pre Giro he already had scored almost twice as many cq points as Froome had when he broke out aged 26.

Wiggins is also definately more suspicious. I remember his own friend Rob Hayles laughing on Eurosport when he heard Wiggins wanted to be top 20 in that Tour. Would anyone have laughed if someone suggested Landa would come top 20. And wiggins that Tour had one of the highest VAM's ever on Verbier, + a verified very fast time up Ventoux.
TT point stands too. 4th at 45 seconds>>>>>>>>> 52nd at 4 minutes 14 seconds.

You can read clinic into a lot of comments.

The thread subject is purely a comparative one though. Who had the most surprising breakthrough. Of course many of us will read clinic behind it but that is not the explicit aim of the thread.

No different to the - name the top 10 climbers ever, threads and similar.

A better suggestion would be for a moderator to intervene and give warnings to all the clinic related posts.

Hitch is absolutely right that Froome and Landa are not even close... It was just a matter of time Landa breaks into the T-20. That was crystal clear before this Giro. OTOH, nobody expected it from Froome even after the 2011-TT at the Vuelta. Not even his own DS.

About the clinic I meant the "transformation" and "tone it down" comments. Words strongly associated with the clinic I would say. ;)

Pereiro Sio: 2006 Tour (mostly luck on his part).

Oscar's TdF win wasn't luck, it was luck in such a monumental scope I don't even know if there's even a word for it.

So many things had to happen at exactly the right time in the right place for him to win that, when he almost won, everyone was scratching their heads in amazement wondering "how the f*ck did this guy make it through?".

Days later we were still talking about how lucky the guy was, how he was able to move up unnoticed, getting 10, 20-minute on everyone else right before the mountain stages while everyone was "wait a second, that guy can climb!". Then Landis tested positive and that was just a diarrhea of luck of such a monumental scope that, had he played the lottery that day, he probably would've won it three times.

Reminds me a lot of the Saunier Duval paring of Piepoli and Ricco in 2008. Everyone else looks to be in the red and "stocky" Landa looks like his going for a stroll in the park.

Very disappointed to see this in a Grand Tour in 2015 with the history of this sport.

Heras still won in the end but he only had like 30 seconds. Having watched the last two MTFs again, though, I agree that we're in for some Landa magic in the remaining climbs.
