It is Euskaltel

It's a forum. We use sentence fragments, abbreviations, acronyms we make up on the fly and other devices we probably would never use in a paper or something more formal. There's no need to go around correcting people's spelling or grammar, particularly if your goal is simply to belittle someone.

Fwiw, I think Arnout's intent was good and I'm glad he started the thread. He could have responded to an individual who misspelled it in a condescending way as some posters might have done.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I've actually been a fan of the team for awhile and have never noticed there was an 'l' in the middle of the word, probably because it comes right before the 't' and blends in a bit.

While I sometimes shudder a bit when I see horrible spelling or grammar, it is a forum, and an international one at that. You just have to let it go.

While we're on the subject, when I saw someone write "whinging" in a post I used to think it was a typo and the person was trying to type "whining" but I've since come to the conclusion that they are just British and American versions of the same word. Question: do you pronounce the first part of the word like you would "wing" or is the 'g' silent?

pronounciation of "whinging"

win-j-ing

So what people misspell Euskaltel

It's not half as bad as Rebbelin, Pozatto, Benatti, Pettachi, Betinni and other raped Italian names.
And in the Netherlands, the most common mistake made is people spelling Geesink (RIP) instead of Gesink. Which is also annoying like hell.

Oh and add to that classics like Kreuzinger instead of Kreuziger...

I sort of expected reactions like this.

Thread was only meant to be half-serious and expected to get more flame. But the result will, hopefully, be that people now spell it correctly ;)

I always try to spell all names correctly, because I cannot stand it when people misspell my name, which happens quite often.

I hate it when people spell MY name wrong. I think it's respectless not to care about spelling names correctly. I know the CN forum posts isn't intended for the person/team himself/itself, but some names are just blatantly misspelled.... EuskaLtel isn't one of them, and earlier I myself had trouble comprehending why Petacchi wasn't spelled Pettachi.

The reason might be that our native commentators misspronounciate the rider names, who knows? I certainly see why Greipel could be misspelled, but a legend like Oscar Freire (who constantly is being called Friere) should be spelled correctly.

Arnouts intention is pretty clear to me, and as a teacher (in Danish) I must say that I don't correct errors on forums if they are phonetic or likewise, just if they are a result of simple laziness. Some errors in this forum ARE indeed based on basic "I don't care" attitude.

Not the EE one, though;)

While we're complaining about spelling and grammar I want to take a second to complain about "begs the question". I've seen it misused multiple times in the last week on this forum and I cringe every time. It's a logical fallacy, it is not when one thing raises a question about another. Please remember; every time you misuse that phrase a baby kitten dies. Think of the kittens! </rant>

Back to cycling, how about them Euskatel boys? They would of had a great volta if Anton wouldn't of got hurt, eh?

Not versions of the same word, but "whining" and "whinging" are two separate words, the latter not being common in American English.

Though they both mean more or less the same thing.

I would shoot myself if I ever got his name wrong, I mean he's on a poster on the wall which is facing my computer screen (FTR, it's a poster for Sidi cycling shoes, nothing fanboyish about it :D).

I make an exception for you. Not that you normally only make 1 spelling error.

Frankly, the non-Anglophones have the best standard of English on the board much of the time. It's fairly predictable though, because you don't have to learn the basics of English grammar at school as a new system when you're already old enough to comprehend it - it's something you learn naturally and is then taken as read later in life, whether you successfully learnt it or not.

tbh, it does not really bother me if I make spelling errors on this forum as i don't bother with using specific punctuation and don't bother correcting my spelling errors as people can comprehend the general idea of my post. Anyway, it is only a cycling forum.

Win. Thread over.
