Is it possible that Alaphilippe thought it was the final lap already?

No. He said that he didn't have very good legs and was trying to anticipate to help Dan Martin hoping that 2-3 riders could come along with him. (Pretty optimistic when you see his attack. )

Even when he is not in good shape he can produce these brutal attack, but just can not sustain them.

Extremely poor year for Bardiani in Italian races. Their 'best' results;

4th - Stage 6, Giro.
7th - Coppa Agostoni.
9th - Stage 19, Giro.
9th - Trofeo Matteotti.

Good luck with that Giro invite.

Ciccone, their only major rider left, was injured or still harmed most of the season. But yeah, maybe Nippo deserves it more next year to be at the Giro!

They won't be invited, be it because of this, or because of what happened before this Giro...

True. I think the wildcards will be:
Israel Cycling Academy
Androni
Willier
Nippo

Or maybe Gazprom again? CCC? I hope not.

They really should invite either Coquard or Bouhanni. Since one of them certainly won't be at the Tour.

Hmm, I think both of them will be at the Tour next year.

Guillaume Martin, on the other hand...

Great win for Uran. He has some very good results this year and looks set to keep the momentum going next season.

In that case they should absolutely invite Martin, Pasqualon & Co.

Please not Wilier, the only decent rider they have is Mareczko but he can sprint only after a pan flat stage and he's still not contracted for next season.
Pozzato even if he's still decent in cobbles classics at the Giro is useful only for PR and for the post stage De Stefano talk show (when he doesn't finish after half an hour).
Other riders are either send in nonsense break or used for nonsense punishment chasing when they miss the nonsense break, in stages where the break has chance are (like Bardiani) nowhere near the front.

Androni at least when invited animates the breaks in hard stages and Nippo has Canola that this year showed potential in reduced sprints after pretty hard stages.

If there is a merit criteria based on what a team could offer in the race before Wilier we have at least Caja Rural, Gazprom, Roompot, Cofidis, Delko, Wanty, Direct Energie but probably also Aqua Blue, Fortuneo.

Willier kit is enough reason to make them start at the giro.

Absolutely. But so is Nippo Vini Fantinis kit. And with an additional jersey sponsor next year I expect even more colour.

Merit is at best a tie breaker between teams that otherwise have equal claims. It will be Androni (Italian cup), Israel Cycling Academy (RCS are getting big money to advertise Israel), and either two other Italian teams or one Italian team and Rusvelo, depending on whether Gazprom buy Rusvelo a spot.

Even if we fall outside the merit criteria a team like Wilier or Bardiani have nothing to offer, no big money, no big sponsors, an invite for one of these two team will be only a beneficence from RCS.

YelloFluo actually was rumored to become United Colors of Benetton pro cycling before Santa and Di Luca ruined all plans. Nowadays there not even a decent pro continental squad. Bardiani has been a good farm team in the past. But this season really has been atrocious in all aspects. Nippo hasn't stepped up either since they were joined by Vini Fantini and went pro continental. It's like a desert. Savio has strengthen up his team again after some underwhelming years, but he's fallen in disfavor for the Giro organization. Eventually not even Segafredo has stepped up as expected at Trek. It ain't no good with Italian cycling team wise. Segafredo might change that in long-term view though with their investment into the self owned farm team.
