You have to draw the line somewhere but as a statement of principle it is to be welcomed.
The line was already drawn - they got caught, they were suspended, they paid their penalty. When do you stop penalizing riders just for being the dumb/unlucky ones who got caught? It's less a "statement of principle" as it is simply piling on easy and convenient targets like DiLuca and Ricco to make oneself appear to be one of the good guys fighting the good fight.

imo it's laughable to allow guys currently suspected of doping or caught up in doping scandals (eg a Ballan or Cunego) the chance to win while denying those who have already served their time (eg DiLuca) the same chance.

"only riders who had been suspended after 1 August 2008"

Basso, Garzelli, Scarponi unaffected. Maybe Ricco rides as well. Can we get poll with the choices: 1) lol 2) That's not funny?

The ban after 1st august 2008 is pretty silly; or you ban all the guys otherwise dont ban anyone.

On the other side Im pretty sure this wont take place as I guess the riders who would be affected could suit FCI to dont allow them to do their job (after they served the ban as by rules).
Di Rocco has often nice words/ideas but then it often doesnt follow by facts.
Let's see what happens.

Utterly hilarious and illogical. The Italians have outdone themselves this time.

From my reading, it ties in to a ruling in July 2008 relating to the selection of any rider that has had a doping sanction for national teams, so they have simply extended the scope of the original ruling - makes sense, as if they chose another date, there may be grounds for court action.

I agree. I also don't see how this ban will stand up in court. How can you be eligible for every other race on the calendar except for the nationals? It makes no sense.

+1 The cut off date makes it even worse. Old dopers are OK?

So if you were busted on July 31 2008, you're a doper who can wear the national jersey but if you were busted on August 2 2008, you're a doper who is banned from competing. Seriously, wtf is the point of that?

We call it a three year suspension, instead of two.
