I can't help but wonder - when does he want leadership for PR? Second place two years in a row means he can win.

I know vdP will want to win again, but there has to be a bit of "you ride for me here, I'll ride for you there" behind the scenes with those two. I'd expect vdP to put Flanders first and foremost on his demands. They're both huge stars at this point.
He wants leadership starting last year, but he won't get it as long as he is on the team with the defending champion.

If I didn't have him on my Zweeler classics team, I probably wouldn't have noticed, but damn he has been unlucky result-wise since the opening weekend when one takes into account how good he has been looking.

All-out attacking in Nokere Koerse, looking by far the strongest in the race, then crashing just before the sprint.

Having a mechanical at a critical point in MSR combined with the after-effects of said crash made him get dropped really early and not even contest the sprint for fourth.

Barely avoided the crash mayhem at De Panne, but still didn't get a result.

Made Pedersen's attack at GW, then punctured. Looked great on the Kemmelberg. Was then blocked in the sprint and not in the top 40.

I swear I could have been in the lead of that game if not for this incredible series of non-results.
