I think his long years at Caisse didn't help him, because I think he was always treated as domestique there and not given chances. It's maybe ingrained into his mindset that he's second fiddle--and why he's fully satisfied when he fails.
It often hapens when you've raced for Caisse de Valverde... I mean, Caisse d'Epargne. Everything plays second fiddle to Valverde there.
I remember a few years ago, possibly 2005, when Iván Gutiérrez was in the yellow jersey of a minor stage race, with a favorable ITT to come the next day which would have probably allowed him to consolidate the overall win. Yet, instead of protecting Gutiérrez, they made him go deep into the red so that Valverde could win a stage, which he did. The next day in the ITT, Gutiérrez lost the overall by a mere couple of seconds. Yes, for Caisse, a stage win with Valverde was more important than an overall win with another rider. This is when I stopped seeing Caisse as anything other than a joke team.
Unfortunately, cyclists who have ridden in this team find it incredibly difficult to get rid of the domestique mentality, which is so ingrained in the team.
