Like this guy more and more. If he tried to attack before the 1 km mark a little bit more often he would be 1 of my favs :)

He sticks with his strength, which is being able to climb with anyone and then kick them in the teeth at the end. It's tough to actually win a tour like that, so I'm pretty impressed with how well he's done in them over the last few years.

From Stage 20 thread (Bola del Mundo) regarding Purito's huge gap/buffer over Froome:

He may not have had it to go sooner. He may have blown early if he went earlier, but for all his brilliant riding and his terrific Bola climb he gained nothing today. His placing stayed the same even though he had so much time over 4th. He *could* have risked it all and if it missed he could have salvaged third regardless.

I think his long years at Caisse didn't help him, because I think he was always treated as domestique there and not given chances. It's maybe ingrained into his mindset that he's second fiddle--and why he's fully satisfied when he fails.

People like Nadal and Federer absolutely hate losing. Find it far more painful than the joy of winning. Federer used to throw his GameBoy console (or whatever it was) and wreck hotel TVs regularly if he lost to his coach on GameBoy or anything. Extends to everything. Cycling is different, but Purito doesn't have this mentality.

Then again, he's a class act. No whingeing, no excuses, no pomposity.

It often hapens when you've raced for Caisse de Valverde... I mean, Caisse d'Epargne. Everything plays second fiddle to Valverde there.

I remember a few years ago, possibly 2005, when Iván Gutiérrez was in the yellow jersey of a minor stage race, with a favorable ITT to come the next day which would have probably allowed him to consolidate the overall win. Yet, instead of protecting Gutiérrez, they made him go deep into the red so that Valverde could win a stage, which he did. The next day in the ITT, Gutiérrez lost the overall by a mere couple of seconds. Yes, for Caisse, a stage win with Valverde was more important than an overall win with another rider. This is when I stopped seeing Caisse as anything other than a joke team.

Unfortunately, cyclists who have ridden in this team find it incredibly difficult to get rid of the domestique mentality, which is so ingrained in the team.

"Podium, four stage wins, we're about to win 2 jerseys, we won in Bola del Mundo: we did a great Vuelta".

"I'm happy of my shape today, unfortunately I didn't manage to take the second place in GC"

"If I think the strongest won the GC? Yes I do, classifications never lie".

 I wouldn't be so sure JRod

If Valverde overtakes J Rod in the points classification, they'll both be tied at 8 points in the combination classification.

Will the tie be broken according to GC ranking?

I've seen all stages of this years Vuelta, except one: The Fuente Dé stage. Instead I went and helped a friend. When I got back home and saw the news that AC had won the red jersey I was...wtf? And still I'm wondering how this could happen. But I think that the rest day might have some answers. They say that JRod had been sleeping most of the day away or was he just watching video movies? And maybe it's true that he didn't think AC could pull it off and thus let him go...but for sure JRod's legs were pretty weak that day.

I feel sorry for JRod, even if I have been cheering for AC. This was his big chance to win a GT and he blew it. I really like JRod, what a gentleman he his. Never s*** talks his oppenents and I thank the gods that he was in this Vuelta, because this has been the most exciting GT for years.

And come to think of it, if Valverde hadn't lost time on the stage where he crashed, he could have been the winner.

What a race this has been!

Looks like Valverde got the points and the combination jersey. Too bad Purito didn't get a leaders jersey, but in hindsight Katusha probably should have known Valverde would try something and should have marked him.

Poor Purito ended up with No jersey of any kind.....wow all that excellence and ends up with 3 stages and 3rd.

But he could take the World Tour points lead in Worlds :) Would be nice to see him get that title he's had a Great Season!

I don't think Worlds give World Tour points, do they ?

And what award does that give him????

The award of "This is the ranking that Team managers often look at, so better salary and transfer options" ;). But you are right it would be nice for him to win something after getting this many good places. Is he gonna be in Lombardia, BTW?

I was cheering for Contador, but I too feel bad for Purito. Lost the Vuelta with one bad stage. Lost the Giro on the last day of racing. Lost the points jersey on the last day this year, last day last year. Still, as someone noted, he never complains, never says anything bad about his opponents, and shows he is a real class act.

I can't think of anyone who deserves a grand tour win more.

Yes a Class Act:

He said it was only right that Contador had won. “There’s no doubt he was the best. We have to congratulate him for the whole three weeks. He tried [to get the lead] every day and he pushed me to the limit. Then at Fuente Dé [stage 17] we couldn’t follow him. He deserves the win.”

He just needs to get rid of those near misses and bad days!!!

I hope that settles once and for all who was the strongest. :D

He's just bowing to him because he knows how hard this is for Purito. Losing both his jersey's on the final day to Valverde, missing out on the best chance he's ever had to win a grand tour. He's throwing him a bone ;).

Obviously he needs to find a stronger team. Katusha is too weak in depht and who could show some satisfaction with his results.

He can't go anywhere now. Only after 2013. And i don't sure that he can ride good time trials in other team, without Canyon bike and Michael Rich

Liquigas would be a good team for him. That way they can take revenge on Nibali. :D

Liqui don't even have enough money to keep Nibali, and JR is demanding more salary than Nibali's offer

This is double edged sword of the "points" system. I totally agree with Purito on this one. Teams have been having a field day with this points drama, excluding riders from races and discarding riders that are low in points. Well how about riders with large points demanding more money from their own team! None is better than the other so one may argue it balances things out? I think it exposes a system that needs to be fine tuned or discarded.
