Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

Spending 80 km on the bike of Tratnik is very far from ideal, even a couple centimeters make a lot of difference.

Besides that, the reality is Pogacar didn't wanted Vingegaard pulling to make time on the others GC riders alongside him. He wanted Vingegaard pulling, to isolate him and attack him more later.

If Pogacar was so concerned on taking time in riders like Roglic, he alongside Emirates could had helped Visma when Roglic was behind in the first section of gravel.
Honestly Pogacar attempted to break up the field at some points on the course that were a waste of energy. He may have wanted to inflict chaos to scatter Visma's team support and almost managed that except for Mateo's support. Roglic's in 4th and his DS would be feeding that position to him if it mattered; which seems it didn't. He'd prefer to dispose of either Remco or Jonas to simplify his life at this point.

Jonas & Visma are surely playing the long game towards the 3rd week showdown
For sure.

Oh 100 %

Pogi hoped Vingo would loose his mind and ride hard with him and Remco for another 50 k and then he would be very droppable on later gravel sections. Remco just wanted to be in a 3-man group so his team wasn’t outnumbered and he could finally be in a good position in the group. We saw Vingo needing Matteo and Laporte to elevator him back onto Pogi’s wheel, that need only increases if Vingo starts making the race harder for himself.

I am all for adventurous riding, but for Jonas to ride there it would just be plain silliness.

Post-stage comments by Vingo and Jorgenson pretty much confirm their decisions. Pogacar is the main rival they focus on and the goal was simply not to lose time to him.

He was riding so fast himself, we didn’t think about it, But in all kinds of situations, we thought it was better for us to have more teammates in case something happened. So, of course, in some way, it would have been better to ride because Primož and Remco were not there. But on the other hand, our goal was not to lose time, so maybe it was better to wait.

The rival of the Tour is Pogačar

Evenepoel said the same thing. They are right from their perspective. Vingegaard is correct from his perspective. They can all say what they think and have a different opinion.

This may end up biting Visma in the ass though, there are scenario's imaginable where they might wish Vingegaard distanced Ayuso, Almeida, Roglic and Rodriguez today. Let's say in the last week, he is isolated in the mountains (not too hard to imagine), but Pog still has Almeida and Ayuso close in GC. One of those attacks (or both do, tagteam), now Vingegaard has to chase them because they are only a minute down in GC, so he can't risk it to let them go. If he had put them back 3 minutes today, there would be a lot less reason for him to chase them in such a scenario. Same with Roglic. Evenepoel and Rodriguez actually. So his passive/defensive way of riding today, could prove to be a risky tactic in the end.
His only slim chance to win this tour is to ignore all that, as he's doing. He needs to bet on Pogi not gifting anything to anyone.

I talked to several riders, DS yesterday and all seemed very critical of Vingegaard.

He sure didnt gain any respect many even said far worse things than have circulating around media regarding him beeing just a wheelsucker. I was suprised of it actually the lack of respect from so many seems a bit to much.

Now you're just trolling. (and since you're anonymous, what are the "far worse things" that were said?)

My armchair fan take: We can only take Jonas's word for it, which is above. Riders who don't "respect" the 2X defending TdF champ? I guess they could do better after suffering a pretty serious crash and without your 2 best domestiques (Kuss and a subpar Wout). And riding a teammate's bike, after 2 flats, on roughly the same terrain where Pog went on an 80km solo earlier this year? Give me a break.

Yes, a 100% Vingegaard might have continued on with Pog. But a 100% percent Vingegaard doesn't get dropped on the Galibier descent either.

Why are they critical? Goal was not to lose time, and to minimize that risk it was important to stay with his teammates if something happens, and Vinge did have a puncture. Perfectly understandable race tactics.

I think people make too much of this. Sure, maybe it is not entertaining, but Vinge and his team are here to win the tour. Considering the stage doesn't really suit him, how strong Pog are on stages like this, how risky the stage is, and his lack of preparation, how can you blame him for riding like he did? Don't really understand the criticism.

Wow.
What happened to thread title?

Just this moment about to catch up on forum posts after yesterday's late night watch and first digestions after Troyers stage.

I expected he would not exactly gain fans, but both stage thread, news and this thread seems far more toxic than I would've imagined.

My first thoughts while watching yesterday was pure logics, using Tratnik's bike and uncomfortable psychologics.

Besides the unknown unknowns being under such huge pressure while not even himself knowing his true abilities in the decisive stages to come.

Troyes was not exactly Jonas ground and the defensive line was pure logic to me.

I fully agree he could've taken a couple of pulls, just alibi pulls to show some goodwill.

But that's about it.

If he'd done real pulls the risk would be using far to much energy on his closest competitors' home ground. By not taking turns he ensured their motivation going full monty bananas faded, saving himself some energy.

I know this is not good TV, but pure logics.

I wish I was. He didnt gain any friends or respect from his colleagues yesterday. I was suprised of the extent of it myself and it seemed to much. I tried to reach out to him and the team usually I can but yesterday I couldnt. Its not that deep but im not gonne lie I was surprised and wanted to reach out and give my support.

I gotta say I'm a bit offended as an amateur comedian. I liked the pun which made sense after the Remco interview, and I've never seen Armstrong's nickname getting censored on here. PC gone mad, but I've called the IT guy to get it fixed.
And while we are discussing the thread title, the thumbnail could do with a change as well.

EDIT: The new one only shows Pogi ...
