José Luis Martinez, doping distributor, caught

Was this already posted? I can't find it anyway.

José Luis Martinez, ex-customer of Fuentes and now self-made doping distributor, has been caught by Spanish police. Apparantly due to suspicious behavior in the last 2 Vuelta's (but of course this doesn't exclude possible activities in other places).

They found what you would expect: equipment for blood transfusions, testosterone and, wait for it...

Clenbuterol.

it's the guy who escorts the riders to the anti-doping tent after the race.

good lord, cycling really is so much cleaner now.

He probably had to take that stuff off the cyclists so they didn't have it on them in the doping control!

I couldn't read the article, but as he's Spanish, I doubt he'll be ratting on anyone:mad:

Otherwise you'll be telling me that Froome is going to be rewarded for holding on to his distant 3rd place, after all??
(Or, more likely, his second place in 2011.)

What makes you so sure he wasn't working for Sky?

I thought that Clenbuterol offered no performance enhancement, was old had and was not what Spanish riders used these days.

What will come of it?

He will bung the police a large amount of euros, the President will get involved, it will all go away despite rumours that he is supplying 10% of top riders in Spain. Ah and UCI/WADA will still allow Spain to compete in World Championships and Olympics notwithstanding the fact that they continually brush drugs scandals under the carpet and protect their countrymen from sanction.

Deja Vu anyone?

Best part? He worked as a chaperon at the Vuelta.

That is hilarious. He works as a chaperon for his clients.

Wonder if he's Berti's newest supplier now that Marti isn't around.

Since everyone stopped doping in 2006, he needed to do something to keep busy.

and so we learn more about how testing can be smoothly circumvented.

basically, there is not a single link in the chain of anti-doping that can be trusted.

No but he can look the other way while the riders use powders to ruin the sample, for one.

A chaperone's job is to stay with the rider until he has provided a sample. You seriously see no conflict of interest if the chaperone is a friend of the rider?

of course I see that, but it's not as easy to cover your pee, also what if martinez isn't your chaperone in a stage for a rider that is doped? talk about risky

According to the rapports he behaved suspiciously while chaperoning, whatever that mean. Maybe he was a bit too eager about who he was to chaperon?

UCI certainly knows how to pick them. You'd think there would be ample supply of good ppl wanting a job in Spain the last two years, but they had to hire an ex-cyclist who of course is friends with some of the riders, not to mention he was implicated in Operation Puerto.

exactly what i wanted to ask: who's responsible for the hiring of chaperones?
is uci at fault here or is it the vuelta?
