Did cut gesticulating to minimum today, didn’t even celebrate!
Chapeau Ala!

He thought Nibali was still ahead lol.
I guess that's understandable. He would have flown passed him in about 2 seconds the speed Nibali was going when he was caught.

Good job Alaphilippe. He said he wanted Valverde back because if he won Fleche Wallone he WANTED a fully healthy Valverde in the field or it wouldn't mean as much.

Alaphilippe came of age today. Favourite for the worlds?
Given his performance in pais vasco clearly not. He can survive 2km @ 10%, but not 7km @ 6% or 3km @ 11% when raced full speed.

I wouldn't underestimate him, he did podium in a really hard Lombardia after all.

The group after Civiglio was still pretty big though and SFDB is pretty much a perfect climb for him. There is no climb where he'll be the strongest rider in the worlds route. I wouldn't completely rule him out yet, as I still give him a better chance than I gave GVA before the olympics, but he certainly isn't the favorite.

Yeah if you rewatch Il Lombardia you can see that the group of favorites was split in two big parts and Pinot at the front. Alaphilippe wasn't among the best 10 riders on the Civiglio

Re: Julian Alaphilippe

Beating Valverde for the FW win, it doesn't get much better than that. Bravo Julian! HUGE win! He was Balaphilippe today. Fantastic!!!

He also got what he wanted. He spent the off season saying he wanted Valverde to come back healthy so he could race him again in the Ardennes. He'd said that if he won in the Ardennes without Valverde there it wouldn't mean nearly as much. Today he said this was his most special win because he beat Valverde in the Ardennes. There's a great photo of the two embracing both with huge smiles on the podium. I think that says a lot about these great riders. Just wish we only have a few more years to watch them race against each other. Due the age difference we won't get many more of these great battles.

Here's a great photo from the podium that shows how much respect these two have for each other. Gotta love the huge smiles they both have. This is one of 3 pictures Alaphilippe posted after winning today.

"J'ai gagné(I won)? Je croyais qu'il y avait Nibali(I thought there was Nibali)!" @alafpolak was convinced to have finished 2nd, again, of the Flèche Wallonne. Live the moments of happiness sublime and sincere of the immense victory of the French ❤️

The tweet above contains a video of Alaphilippe after crossing the finish line, asking if he'd won.

Happy to see Alaphilippe on the top step in a race like this. Seems he's been knocking on the door for ages.

Major step for Alaphilippe! Very, very strong ride, chapeau! Looking up to Liege, if he pulls that out, he's among the very best of the peloton...

No. I think that in order to win worlds he would have to attack before the last lap and hope his rivals underestimate his climbing.

Who are the major favorites for the worlds and European Championsshipps?

For worlds: Nibali, and Valverde are at the top of the list. Others such as Bardet, Aru, Chaves and other elite GC riders. Note that this is not an exhaustive list.

Finally the strongest in on the climbs in a monument. Still no monument won. Ofcourse he did great work to help a teammate, but I wonder if it doesn't start to sting somewhere
