If he were some black guy from the "hood," the question of whether his life should be ruined wouldn't be in question (mostly because his chance in life had been seriously hindered just for being born poor and black). So yea, setting a police car on fire is a serious crime. He deserves his punishment whatever that entails. I am pretty sure that most crime is committed in a heated moment, but that does not change the fact that if you do the crime, you do the time.
