Someone should have told him to not shoot the messenger.
There's an interesting story about Hemingway. He had been treated for depression with electro-convulsive shock therapy. The first round seemed to provide relief, but caused him to suffer amnesia and ruined his ability to concentrate or write, so his friends hoped that a second round wouldn't be necessary.
Over the following weeks, however, Hemingway became convinced that he was being followed by FBI agents, that his mail was being opened, and that his phones were tapped. His doctors viewed these paranoid delusions as indicative of the need for more shock therapy, and it was duly administered. It was said that afterwards he was not the same man. Within months he was dead from a shotgun blast to the head, an apparent suicide.
More than three decades later, in the 1990's, Hemingway's FBI file was obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. Thus was it found out that he was being followed by FBI agents, his mail was being opened, and his phones were tapped.
