Anyone checked the atheltic's licence numbers? If my little theory holds, those should have gone up as well. Cycling can be seen as a "cheap" sports. Cheaper than Triathlon, golf, or Nascar.
What about the live television hours for cyclin, how have those evolved? CHin guy may have triggered those, but not necessarily the reason for people to enlist. They may well have been thinking "if that old fart can compete, sure I can". Darn, again Lance does it. How fast would I ride with such an ego?
