With all this talk of "cycling regaining its soul", can somebody remind me exactly when it was that cycling lost its soul? When it was that TdF riders didn't take drugs?
Pretty much right about the time (99) when Lance decided to dope well and win.

Exactly. There is no soul to save!

Hilarious. I'm sure sweaky clean Froome will save the soul it doesn't have.
The soulless shall save the soulless.

Drugs are the soul of cycling.

Its uncomfortable, I know.

This is overly dramatic. The elite level sport is a joke, but the doping there is not "the soul of cycling."

Elite doping doesn't shut down cafe runs or your local Wednesday World Championships.

Bottom line is the UCI has the tools to greatly limit doping and will not use them.

Yeah the soul of cycling has nothing whatsoever to do with the .1% of cyclist who get paid to do it, surely?

99.8% of riders just ride.

There's another .1% of amateurs who dope but it's still not the soul of cycling.

The soul of cycling is the freedom it provides. The connection with your environment. The comraderie and shared experiences.

I was talking exclusively about top level racing, and in particular grand tours with an eye to the past, whether it be Bahamontes or Coppi, or Maurice Garin, Merckx or Armstrong.

In one way, your point is very romantic, but I still disagree.

The testing infrastructure is in place. It works well. Now we need the IOC to take anti-doping seriously. Not much money in doing that though.
