Lanky Poels? What do we know about him?

Only one DNF, plenty of DNSs. Those two years where he finished between 75th and 80th could have just been bad days/slaving for the leaders. Not many conclusions to take from that list.

Better to judge him based on his racing coming here. He had just been 4th in Flèche and was 12th last year at Lombardia. He is not a donkey on this terrain, there's been progression.

You shouldn't try to spin this as "another nobody that Sky turned into a champion", as I've seen some folks do over Twitter. That would just expose both your bias and your ignorance.

What spin? It's a discussion forum, let's discuss Poels!

No need to be so sensitive.

Come on hog, you watched the 2011 Vuelta, because it's where the Chris Froome show began. Poels beat him on Angliru :)

and what has Poels done since?

Let me extent that list for you:

2003 DNS

I think this is thehog disqualifying himself from ever being taken seriously again in any thread.

and what has Poels done since?

Recovering from a nasty crash in the '12 TdF that resulted in a lot of nasty internal organ damage.

According to BigMac Poels is Monument winner material but I don't see any previous Monument podiums or classic podiums.

That's just ignoring all the nuances involved... Monuments are not necessarily ridden harder than other races just because they are Monuments. Poels has shown to be world class on hilly races raced much harder and against as fierce opposition as today. This hasn't come out of the blue if you bother to take a look at his results. I'm not saying he did it on bread and water, but the basis of the current accusation is just silly.

Surely though the hypothesis that "Sky win because they simply buy the best riders" doesn't stand up to scrutiny here.

World class? Really where are the world class wins then?

Di Luca winner 2007 in 6h37 mn, Poels 6h24 mn. Toady's weather was appalling to ride in but Poels did it faster than Di Luca super juicer.

Super potential. Lots of top-10s in weeklong stage races (l'Ain, Vasco, Tirreno).

Always been on dodgy teams.

Seems like the perfect Sky rider. Always close to the fire, but never burned.

Re: Re:

Nevermind that the 2007 route was longer to begin with and that today's was shortened on top of it. Also, this isn't a time trial - have you considered that it may have been caused by a higher tempo in the peloton? Comparing race times is not like comparing times up a particular climb.

Well JV and Walsh told us that everything had changed because speeds were down!

Do people really believe Poels won LBL clean? Really.

I don't think so. At least, I don't hope so.

This thread is just hilariously bad. As a comedy thread this thing is fine, maybe a bit below par, but don't expect us to take it seriously when the opening post is nothing but flat-out trolling. If this is meant as a well-thought out addition to a discussion on doping and a serious accusation, then it's one big fail.

No, not really. That doesn't make every single argument that he dopes valid.

Poels wins a monument, never podium a classic never mind a monument and posters think a thread for Poels is OTT.

Posters are making comments about it. Fair game. He has shown some pretty decent ride ability. But i bet his odds were not short.

This.

There's almost nothing worse in a debate then someone failing hard in defending a position you actually agree with, giving the opponents an easy way in. This must be one of the worst arguments for doping I've ever seen.
