Lappartient is worse for cycling than Cookson?

The cards have been reshuffled on the UCI Cycling Council. That’s a fairly good make up. All the Brits have been banished.

Stapleton and Ekimov from Armstrong fame is interesting.
It'd be so much more better if it was the Stapleton from Armstrong fame, wouldn't it, and not the other one?

One presumes that Ekimov is Igor Makarov's man on the inside...

It's quite the media blitz he's on. If it's Friday, it must be CN. Nothing much of note, but asked if Grand Tours could be reduced in duration he said this:
In the reform I want to implement, everything must be on the table. There is no subject that we cannot discuss. The problem is that we have more and more races on the calendar, and the three Grand Tours take up 69 days on the calendar. That’s a lot, so it’s quite difficult. The Tour de France is the Tour de France, I would say, but for the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España, why not discuss with the organisers about this?

What's the point of more races if they are reduced?

I can't see the clear upside of spreading race days out in a thinner layer.
1) This is a hypothetical. A response to a question. 2) Read the interview. With Grand Tours taking up 69 race days in a year, and the desire being not to have overlapping World Tour races, your ability to add races in developing cycling markets is limited, as is your ability to shift existing WT races that currently overlap. (And before someone jumps up and down saying the WT doesn't need any more races added: read the interview. He wants a smaller, tighter, more focused WT, but one with the ability to add races in new territories (US, Asia, Africa, wherever) as required.)

This man is quickly becoming the best UCI president ever. Now he just needs a conviction. UCI didn't went easy on Contador, so I hope the same happens here.

“There are rules of conduct,” Lappartient said. “I’m not here to break our rules. It’s not for me to interfere with this case. The procedure is secret, under discussion, and I don’t have any information on it. I do not even know in what stage [of the Vuelta] the sample was taken. I was just informed of an irregular test [result] but I don’t know whether [the taking of salbutamol] was justified or not.”

That doesn't sound promising given that Team Sky have once again decided to play the incompetent doctor card

However Lappartient could just be distancing himself ahead of Froome losing the Vuelta and getting a ban

And regardless of what Lappartient says he will know that this is the first big test of his presidency surely he's not going to flunk it...?

Meantime anyone care to speculate on whether this issue would have seen the light of day under Cookson?

No doubt Brian will be along in a minute to tell us the Froome Dog's reputation should be restored... :D

Is there any degree of coincidence that Sky were informed on or around the day of the election of Lappartient of the AAF of Froome? Perhaps he was hard at work straight away... :)
Yeah, calling up Dr Who to whisk him back him time to the Vuelta to carry out the test...

Which is why it took a German TV station to reveal the fact that he'd popped a positive in the first place...
Yeah, an 18 month ban and two Gt wins stripped is going easy...

They tried to hide it initially. They only had to take action once it was public knowledge and Wada got involved

I can't help to think that Lappartient has something to do with it.

Or I ask a question, whether we would know about this if Cookson was president?

I know this is not good for the sport but yes this is good for the sport! :p

Not sure they could legally do this. All tests from previous GT's have come back clean. So future suspension and stripping of the title from the event at which he tested positive are i'm guessing the only sanctions at the disposal of the authorities.

We don't know about it because of Lappartient...

You clearly still don't get that there's a world of difference between a failed test, and the reporting of said failure.

Why did this one only leak out to the Guardian and Le Monde?
Because of WADA rules...

When has this mattered to the UCI before?

While I understand Lappartient's initial reaction, the fact is that he "inherited the Froome + and SKY coverup" done by Cookson, whose re-election was meant to secure the entire matter would never ever see the daylight, but since he lost, the whole of the dirty business of Froome & SKY got exposed & derailed.

I also tend to believe the so called "secret procedure" has to do entirely between ASO & SKY "partnership" trying very hard to dilute the scandal to the minimum, so when the time comes for CAS, WADA & UCI to set sanctions, it'd be blamed on some made up pseudo science meant to cause the minimum harm to their names altogether....

As some folk already mentioned - this is Lappartient's defining test to prove his stand on dopers/cheaters-specially the ones at the highest ranks
