Or perhaps they just want to provoke others and see how much they can get away with?

....and again:

Sometimes celebrity athletes show up in the most unusual places. Friday night, it was Carbondale, Colorado's turn to be the unlikely location for a head-turning glimpse of America's top two cyclists: Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer.

The Glenwood Springs (Colo.) Post Independent reported Saturday that Astana teammates Armstrong and Leipheimer raced in the Western Slope Omnium Leg Breaker Time Trial in Carbondale.

"They were testing out some prototype Trek time-trial bikes," event promoter Mitch Hyra told the Post Independent.

If you have ever been lucky enough to ride the roads of western Colorado—warm, dry weather, monster climbs, a bike path along I-70, beautiful scenery—you know that alone might be enough to inspire Armstrong and Leipheimer to make an appearance in a small mountain-town race.

Friday night's 16-kilometer time trial provided good training for Stage 1 of the Tour de France, a 15.5-kilometer time trial on July 4.

Event managers tried to keep Armstrong and Leipheimer's appearance under wraps as best as they could, but a post on Armstrong's ever-popular Twitter feed alerted some followers to his whereabouts.

"When someone who wins seven Tour de Frances shows up in Carbondale, it's kind of like the Rolling Stones showing up and playing in your backyard," Hyra told the Post Independent.

Perhaps Mick Jagger and Keith Richards should consider the comparison a compliment.
