I don't think so. He hasn't featured yet, and aside from Kuurne, has not really shown to be a factor anywhere. He wasn't a factor today, as Merlier smoked him, and to me, Philipsen is not showing the speed he has in the last couple of years. Then again, Peyroteo's observation is also relevant. Without Mathieu dropping him off, he just isn't fast enough.

Looking back while being at the front of the bunch in such a situation should always be a fine and a yellow card.
No that's unfair, he's been hit with some bizarre bad luck. Dominated Nokere, then crashed. Followed Mads on the plugstreet, then punctured. In the past years he's been anonymous then got a result, here he's been at the front and then it went wrong. It's a mistake to judge him by results.
I do think he's sprinting slower than he has in the past years, though. Looks quite a bit off Merlier (especially) and Milan.

Yeah I think that's the case - maybe doing more strength/endurance training than sprint. And as he's finished second in P-R two years in a row so if something happens to MvdP he could still break Van Aert's heart.
For Philipsen to be useful at P-R he needs to be strong enough to sit on in the main group, and be faster than Pedersen in a sprint. I have no reason to doubt the latter.

He was 5th over the Muur in Omloop, ahead of Narváez and Van Aert.
Also looked good in Gent-Wevelgem. Struggled in Dwars door Vlandeeren but that race was harder than normal, too hard for him. That said, he has looked a bit slow across all the races he's done.

Some guy pointed out in the Philipsen thread that he has been insanely unlucky relative to his strength this spring.
It's only at DdV he actually had a disappointing performance.
But I will agree that his sprint is not as good as it has been, which I think is a deliberate choice to focus more on classics.
Yeah, and he has been unlucky, and today I thought I saw a hint of doubt in his interview. He wasn't as **** and vinegar about losing, particularly to Merlier, who I have gotten the distinct impression, do not like each other. I never cheer for Jesper, but just looking from an observational standpoint, my assessment has more to do with little clues that he just isn't factoring in this year like he did last year. Obviously, that could change if Mathieu really is still sick, and he is who Alpecin actually have to support.
