I have no idea why DQS were working the whole time. They had nobody who could beat Merlier (or Pedersen) in a sprint and there were three Alpecin guys in the group.

The riders definitely are to blame as well. It was on a local circuit of 11 km. You would expect they atleast read that part in the roadbook.

I think he was either doing that or looking to see if he was clear to change his lane. Right after that he moved in front of Pedersen, a legal move since he was clear.

In the post-race interview he said himself that he was annoyed that he did that, and that he doesn't know why he does that sometimes.
