I must admit, I didn't see him as a top man for Liège given that his best classics performances are in races like E3 and San Remo (and de Ronde), but his mountain domestiquing duties for Contador in '08 meant I knew he could climb when he was on the right form for it, so when he was in the front group I thought he could get a top result.
I didn't think he'd win, but I thought he could get a top result. When him and Rodríguez went away I desperately wanted them to stay away so he got on the podium. Still didn't think he'd win.
He did have to do a lot of domestique work for Vino and the likes in the past, will be interesting to see what he can do when he's a leader. He'll definitely be Astana's leader for these races now along with Gasparotto. Future will tell if he was a fluke winner or the real deal I guess. He's always had the talent, but never seemed to really break through, so I thought it was too late by now.
He was a bit lucky that a lot of top favorites were mediocre as well. Phil, Samu, Schleck sisters, Valverde, Uran(not really a top favorite, but a dangerous outsider), GVA, Cunego, etc
